GAME RECAP

Sam Cassell scored eight of his career-high 33 points in overtime and Chris Gatling added 25 and 11 rebounds, lifting the New Jersey Nets to a 113-109 overtime win over the Milwaukee Bucks and their first 2-0 start in eight years.

Cassell, who sank 15-of-19 free throws, scored New Jersey's last six points. Gatling scored five in the extra session after he tied the game at 100-100 by making a baseline fadeaway shot with eight seconds left in regulation.

"The whole game my leg was numb, but coach just said to play through it," said Cassell. "I told the team to just give ourselves a chance. If we make the plays we'll be all right."

The Nets, who defeated Indiana on Friday, have started 2-0 for the first time since the 1989-90 season.

Glenn Robinson scored 32 points and Ervin Johnson pulled down 14 rebounds for Milwaukee (1-1).

"We gave up a lot of easy transition baskets," said Robinson. "Chris Gatling hit a tough shot. It's just one game and I guarantee we will have a better home record than we did last season. New Jersey made a great run in overtime and just outplayed us."

New Jersey scored the first seven points in overtime, with Cassell scoring on a drive and Gatling off a rebound and on a three-point play, giving the Nets a 107-100 advantage with two minutes to go.

Michael Curry's three-pointer and a pair of free throws by Robinson with five seconds left helped the Bucks climb back within 111-109. But Cassell made a pair of foul shots with 3.9 seconds left to seal the win.

"It was a tough loss at home and the players were disappointed," said Milwaukee coach Chris Ford. "We had good opportunities at the end, but we did not shoot well in the fourth quarter.

"New Jersey played well and had an outstanding game. You can't take that away from them. If the fans stick with us, we'll give them an honest effort in each game."

Gatling, who scored 13 points in the fourth quarter and overtime, has noticed a new camaraderie among the Nets to start the season.

"As a team we were together tonight. We stepped up and stayed together," he said. "Losing was last year. This year we have a very supportive team with tenacity and great rebounding."

Jayson Williams had 13 of New Jersey's 39 rebounds.
