GAME RECAP

Bryant Reeves sank a short jumper with 2.7 seconds remaining to lift the Vancouver Grizzlies to a 97-96 victory over the Sacramento Kings, who were playing their season opener.

Otis Thorpe inbounded to Shareef Abdur-Rahim, who drove to the basket and unleashed an off-balance shot. The rebound came to Reeves under the basket and he laid it in. Rookie Anthony Johnson had a desperation three-point attempt for the Kings but it fell short and into Reeves' hands.

"Shareef made it all happen because he took the ball strong to the hole," Reeves said. "Everybody had to collapse on him so I knew this was my opportunity to get the rebound. Shareef deserves all the credit for making the play."

Abdur-Rahim had 19 points and eight rebounds and Thorpe added 17 and 13 for the Grizzlies, who were edged 90-88 by the Dallas Mavericks in their season opener Friday. In that game, rookie guard Antonio Daniels' three-pointer fell off the rim as time expired.

"I got it and I was like `Oh (shoot)' and threw up a prayer," said Abdur-Rahim. "I was just praying I could get it in. It was just a great play by Country. It doesn't matter how you win the game. If it was pretty or not cause there's so many of them. An ugly win you'll look back at the end of the year and you're happy that you have it."

Mitch Richmond scored 24 points and Corliss Williamson added 18 for the Kings, who were the only idle team on Friday. Richmond made 12-of-13 free throws but the rest of the Kings shot just 50 percent (11-of-22) from the line.

"I think they got confidence as the game went on," Richmond said. "They hit some big shots. We had too many guys go for the blocked shot and that left Big County up under the basket and we just made some mental mistakes down the stretch."

"I think Vancouver had a four leaf clover in their pocket they were hiding," Williamson said.

Billy Owens had 13 points and seven rebounds and put the Kings ahead, 96-95, with 8.1 seconds remaining when he followed up a missed three-pointer by Richmond.

"You never know what'll happen in the NBA," Owens said. "When I made that last little bank shot at then end I thought the game was over. Maybe I shouldn't have danced but I was just trying to do something to keep our guys up."

Abdur-Rahim made a pair of free throws to give the Grizzlies their biggest lead of the game, 93-88, with 3:45 left. Olden Polynice answered with concutive baskets to close the Kings within 93-92 with 2:04 left. Lee Mayberry's eight-footer gave the Grizzlies a 95-92 advantage with 1:41 left.

Michael Smith, who had 12 points and 12 rebounds, made a layup to cut Vancouver's lead to 95-94 with 13.8 seconds left. After a five-second violation by Blue Edwards, Sacramento took over and Richmond's shot just grazed the front of the rim before Owens grabbed the rebound.
