GAME RECAP

Steve Smith scored 15 of his 27 points in the third quarter and the unbeaten Atlanta Hawks again dominated the boards in their third straight win, an 82-71 victory over the Detroit Pistons.

Alan Henderson scored nine of his 19 points in the fourth period and Dikembe Mutombo added 11 points and 13 rebounds for the Hawks, who outrebounded the Pistons 51-30. They hold a 144-94 advantage on the glass this season.

"We have a big objective that we are trying to reach," Mutombo said. "The only way we can do it is to get out strong from the beginning. I'd like to grab the first 10 games or 15."

Brian Williams had 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Pistons, who had won their first two games. Grant Hill, who scored 34 points in a win Sunday at New York, was limited to 14 on 5-of-20 shooting.

"I had good looks and I just couldn't make them," Hill said. "Myself and everyone had good looks. We just couldn't make the shots. I've had good games in domes. That wasn't a factor. The shots were there and they just didn't fall in."

The Hawks, who eliminated the Pistons from the first round of the playoffs last season, are 3-0 for the first time since the 1990-91 campaign. Playing for the first time in the Georgia Dome, the teams combined for just three baskets in the final seven minutes.

"I think you have to adjust to this kind of backdrop," Hawks coach Lenny Wilkens said. "This is all new. We were fortunate enough to get a practice here last night. I figured we'd start out a little rocky. Eventually we'll get used to this place, and it'll be an advantage."

Atlanta took a 37-36 halftime lead on a spectacular play by Henderson. He stole a pass in full stride, dribbled into the frontcourt and launched a running three-pointer that beat the buzzer. It was the first three-point attempt of his career.

"I like to play an active game," said Henderson, who missed 52 games last season with a pancreatic disorder. "I just stay ready for when coach calls me. It just feels good to be able to play from the beginning. Hopefully I can play 82 games."

Smith took over in the third quarter. His three-point play gave the Hawks the lead for good at 45-44 with eight minutes to go and his 15 points in the period allowed Atlanta to take a 65-60 lead into the final 12 minutes.

"He hit some big shots," Wilkens said. "He was terrific offensively."

A dunk by Henderson gave the Hawks a 71-64 bulge with just under seven minutes to play. Neither team scored for 2 1/2 minutes until Henderson made a runner to extend the lead to nine points with 4:31 remaining.

The teams traded free throws and a basket apiece thereafter.

Henderson grabbed nine rebounds and Smith eight for the Hawks, who shot 45 percent (31-of-69) and overcame 19 turnovers.

Malik Sealy scored 14 points and Lindsey Hunter added 11 for the Pistons, who shot 37 percent (28-of-75). Detroit has been beaten on the boards 95-58 over its last two games.

"We just couldn't put the ball in the basket," Pistons coach Doug Collins said. "Steve Smith and Alan Henderson played great."
