GAME RECAP

Glen Rice scored 28 points and Dell Curry added seven of his 23 in a pivotal burst to open the fourth quarter as the Charlotte Hornets handed the Dallas Mavericks their first loss of the season, 110-103.

Rice has scored 28 points in consecutive wins after managing 21 combined in Charlotte's first two games, both losses. He scored 13 points in the third quarter and added a key three-point play down the stretch.

"We just had to get our first two wins under our belt and get our comfort level," Rice said. "We have to stay together and jell."

Curry triggered an 11-5 spurt that gave the Hornets a 10-point lead. After shooting 40 percent through the first three games, he made 8-of-13 from the field, including 4-of-5 three-pointers.

"I feel better now that we have won two in a row," Curry said. "It is good to get a win at home. The team moved the ball well the way we wanted to."

Khalid Reeves scored 24 points and Michael Finley added 20 for the Mavericks (3-1), who were attempting to match the 4-0 start they had in the 1995-96 season. Prior to that, Dallas had never won two straight to open a season.

"We had a good chance to win and I feel we were right in there," Reeves said. "This was a good team, possibly a playoff team, that we lost to tonight. This shows how far Dallas has come."

Leading 82-78, the Hornets began the fourth quarter with an 11-5 spurt. Curry opened it with a three-pointer and added two more baskets. A jumper by J.R. Reid gave Charlotte a 93-83 lead with 8:12 remaining.

"Dell was big-time tonight," Rice said. "I'm glad he has found his stroke. I hope he continues to shoot like tonight because it was fun. I thought, `Why not just join him?'"

"Dell was outstanding," Hornets coach Dave Cowens said. "He came in and lit it up."

A jumper by Finley cut the deficit to 99-96 with 2:33 to go, but Rice made a jumper and was fouled. The free throw gave the Hornets a 102-96 bulge with 2:16 left. Dallas got within two points in the final minute, but Charlotte made its last eight free throws to seal the win.

"The importance of making free throws really came out tonight," Cowens said. "If you don't make your free throws in this game you go home a loser."

David Wesley had 19 points and eight assists and Vlade Divac scored 14 points for the Hornets, who shot 51 percent (41-of-80) from the field and held a 39-32 rebounding edge. Anthony Mason grabbed nine boards.

Hubert Davis scored 15 points and A.C. Green pulled down 15 rebounds for the Mavs, who shot 47 percent (37-of-79) and missed just two of 26 free throws.

"It was tough playing from behind the whole game," Dallas coach Jim Cleamons said. "They are a good ball team and difficult to defend with this many shooters."

Curry scored 15 points in the first half, giving Charlotte a 59-56 lead. Reeves had 13 for Dallas.
