GAME RECAP

Rik Smits scored 12 of his season-high 25 points in the fourth quarter and Reggie Miller had 14 before leaving in the third quarter with an ankle injury as the Indiana Pacers stopped the Detroit Pistons, 99-87.

Smits hit 10-of-15 shots from the field, including 4-of-7 as Indiana built slightly on the 11-point lead it took into the final quarter. He picked up his fifth foul early in the fourth, but continued to score over Detroit center Brian Williams.

"I was just happy to be playing in the fourth quarter," said Smits. "We finally did a good job of protecting a lead. If we had lost this one, it would have been pretty bad for our confidence on the road. I was surprised they didn't double-team me."

Newcomer Chris Mullin added 18 points for the Pacers, who never trailed after taking a 4-2 lead in the early going. Miller twisted his right ankle on a drive to the basket with 9:42 left in the third quarter. He returned briefly before leaving in favor of Jalen Rose, who scored 12 points.

"Reggie's a tough kid. He gets bumped up a lot out there and he always comes back," praised Pacers coach Larry Bird. "I'm sure he'll be sore tomorrow."

Detroit pulled within 57-52 on Grant Hill's jumper with 8:06 remaining in the third quarter. But Dale Davis answered with a basket that spurred a 15-6 run for the Pacers. Mullin scored eight points in the burst, which was capped by Travis Best's bucket with 2:48 left.

"It helps a lot having so many guys who can shoot," Mullin said. "Larry's getting a good mix together and we're getting the ball to the hot guy. That's really important."

Hill finished with 29 points and eight rebounds and Malik Sealy and Lindsey Hunter scored 17 apiece for the Pistons. Williams chipped in with 10 points and 13 rebounds, but had trouble defensively with Smits. Detroit has split its first four games.

"Every night, I'll be guarding All-Stars," Williams said. "Chris Webber, Patrick Ewing, Dikembe Mutombo, Rik Smits, they're all All-Stars. You're gonna catch it sometimes, and tonight I caught it. We need team defense. It's not one guy on this team that's a defensive stopper."

It was the first road victory of the season for Indiana (2-2), which had lost its previous two road games by a total of five points. The win was the Pacers' second straight at Detroit.

Indiana got a big lift from its bench, which outscored the Pistons' reserves, 32-12. Best added seven points and five assists.

The Pacers shot 49 percent (35-of-72) from the field and hit on 28-of-34 from the line while committing just 11 turnovers. They were strong denfesively in the early going, holding Detroit to 17 points in the first quarter.
