GAME RECAP

Chris Gatling scored eight of his 21 points in a game-opening 12-0 run as the New Jersey Nets improved to 3-0 for the first time since joining the NBA with a 112-96 victory over the winless Golden State Warriors.

Gatling hit a 16-footer and followed with a short jumper 2:15 into the contest. After a driving layup by Sam Cassell gave New Jersey a 6-0 lead, Gatling hit a layup with 9:46 to play.

Jayson Williams hit a pair of free throws to push the lead to 10-0 before Gatling capped the burst with a dunk off a feed from Williams with 9:02 to go in the quarter. Gatling finished with nine points in the period and Kendall Gill and Sam Cassell added eight apiece as the Nets built a 33-18 lead.

Cassell finished with 19 points and seven assists and Kevin Edwards came off the bench for 15 as seven Nets -- including all five starters -- reached double figures.

"It was a good game for us," said Nets coach John Calipari. "As a coach there are two things I hate, a 12-0 lead and a 0-12 deficit. When you're up 12-0 the players think the game is easy and then they will let up. I talked to them all day yesterday about getting a big lead and then letting down. I thought we played great team defense and we were patient."

"I think we could really start getting happy when we get 5-0, that's what I'm looking for," Gill said. "Hopefully we can do that even though we are shorthanded. I know 3-0 is something the franchise hasn't done and I'm happy to be part of it."

Since joining the NBA in 1976, the Nets had never won their first three games of a season. They were a charter member of the defunct American Basketball Association, winning its final title.

Donyell Marshall had 21 points and Bimbo Coles added 19 for Golden State, which made just 15-of-42 shots (36 percent) from the field in the first half. It trailed by as many as 28 points in the second half.

The Warriors have opened the season with four double-digit losses on the road under new coach P.J. Carlesimo and lost for the first time in six meetings with New Jersey.

"We all did a very poor job, starting with myself," said Carlesimo. "We have to do a better job getting people involved and freeing Sprewell up. We have to put people in better situations where they can finish plays. We are a lot better than we've played on this trip. It's not their fault, it's mine."

"I definitely thought we were going to be better at this point," said Coles. "I'm still positive that we'll get better as a team over the course of the year, all we have to do is stick together. They just came out and ran the ball down our throats early on. We were just fighting to get in the game."

But teammate and veteran point guard B.J. Armstrong disagreed:

"I don't care what anyone says, this is a rebuilding situation," said Armstrong. "And until we face that as an organization, we'll continue to have nights like we have had in our first four games. Everyone says we have talent but we're 0-4. We haven't even come within 20, so maybe you guys see something I don't. At ths point we are not a very good team."

Golden State made just 7-of-23 shots, committed eight fouls and seven turnovers in the first period. Cassell scored nine points in the second quarter as the Nets extended their lead to 56-40 at the half.

Sherman Douglas had a solid game off the bench for New Jersey with 11 points, six rebounds, three steals and 13 assists in 27 minutes. Williams added 15 rebounds for the Nets, who enjoyed a 55-45 advantage on the boards and committed just 10 turnovers.

"It's a good win for us and guys feel good about themselves," Douglas said. "Guys on the team are making it easier for me. They can score points and they can play, plus we're unselfish and once you have all those combinations going it makes my job easier. I just give them the ball and they go to work."
