GAME RECAPVin Baker scored 24 of his season-high 35 points in the first half and Gary Payton added 19 points and 13 assists, leading the Seattle SuperSonics to a 109-92 victory over the Toronto Raptors.
Detlef Schrempf had 12 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists for the SuperSonics, who got off to a quick start and beat the Raptors for the fourth straight time. Seattle shot 55 percent (46-of-84) from the field and held Toronto to 43 percent (34-of-79).
Seattle jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the first three minutes and never trailed thereafter. Baker had 10 first-quarter points and Jerome Kersey nine in four minutes off the bench as the Sonics made 58 percent (14-of-24) of their shots in the period.
"We got off to a great start. Our defense was good and we made some outside shots," said Seattle coach George Karl. "We read what they were giving us and we made some threes when we needed to. Any win on the road is a good win.
Baker, who scored 14 points in the second quarter, completed a three-point play with 4:20 left in the first half, finishing off a 10-0 run that gave the Sonics a 48-33 lead.
"I told him to run down the middle and play around the rim," said Karl. "Detlef and Gary gave him great passes."
The Raptors used a 9-0 burst over the third and fourth quarters, cutting the deficit to 84-77 with 8:50 left on a three-pointer by Walt Williams. But consecutive three-pointers by Payton and Dale Ellis in the next 59 seconds rebuilt Seattle's lead to 13 points.
"We know Toronto. They make you play. We made the plays when we needed to," Schrempf said. "We knew they were going to trap, so we pushed the ball. We got easy baskets with dunks and layups. That took the wind out of them."
Damon Stoudamire scored 22 points and had seven assists to lead Toronto. Marcus Camby added 18 points and nine rebounds and Williams had 19 points, making 3-of-4 three-pointers.
"We got beat. They played a great game," said Stoudamire, who has turned the ball over just three times in 154 minutes over four games. "They beat out press, found the mismatches and made the shots. They executed their game plan, both offensively and defensively. They played a whole 48 minutes and we played about 30."
Seattle guard Hersey Hawkins pulled down 10 rebounds, with nine on the defensive end.
