GAME RECAP

Penny Hardaway scored 20 points and had a basket, steal and block in pivotal 10-0 run to open the second half as the Orlando Magic defeated the Detroit Pistons, 89-84.

Orlando began the second half trailing, 44-40, but made the first five baskets of the third quarter. Hardaway hit a 14-footer to draw Orlando within 44-42 before Rony Seikaly, who finished with 19 points and 11 rebounds, added an eight-foot jumper to knot the score.

Seikaly hit a five-foot hook with 9:17 left in the quarter, putting the Magic ahead for good. Hardaway picked off a pass and fed Horace Grant for a breakaway layup, then capped the burst with a block that resulted in a basket by Grant as Orlando took a 50-44 lead with 7:52 to go n the third.

"We were desparate for a win," Hardaway said. "We needed to get this win. They are without Joe Dumars and he is a guy that comes in there and makes key baskets. Even though they are doing a good job, they miss Joe greatly."

Malik Sealy led Detroit with 18 points while Brian Williams had 17 and Grant Hill 15. The Pistons have dropped three straight after opening the season with a pair of victories.

"I don't know if I have ever coached a game where I have seen a group of guys make plays that were made tonight," said Pistons coach Doug Collins. "In the fourth quarter we made horrible mistakes with the basketball. When we stopped them we threw the ball away or turned it over."

"It would be one thing if we were not capable of playing better," said Hill. "But I think we all know we are capable of playing better and that is the thing that is frustrating."

Nick Anderson contributed 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Magic, who split their four-game road trip.

"It was one of the games that could have gone either way," said Magic coach Chuck Daly. "Both clubs played very hard. We were able to get the lead and keep it. I think it was our best effort defensively all year."

The Pistons were able to draw within a point on three occassions in the final quarter, including with 4:02 left. But the Magic sealed the win when Hardaway drained a three-pointer and Grant hit a 16-footer for an 82-76 lead.

Lindsey Hunter hit a 20-footer to draw Detroit within 87-84 with seven seconds left but Mark Price made a pair of free throws with 6.4 to go to secure the victory.

After the Magic took an early 6-0 lead the Pistons battled back to draw within 23-22 at the end of the quarter. Orlando made just 10-of-25 shots from the field in the period but grabbed 15 rebounds and committed just two turnovers. Williams had nine of his 17 points in the quarter.

After the teams traded baskets, the Pistons scored the final eight points of the first half to take a 44-40 lead. Williams hit two free throws and Rick Mahorn buried a 10-footer around a pair of long jumpers by Hill. The Magic made just 5-of-21 shots in the period.

After the Magic run gave them a 50-44 advantage, the Pistons were able to draw within a basket with just over five minutes left in the quarter. But Orlando scored five straight points on jumpers by Seikaly and Darrell Armstrong and a free throw by Grant.

Orlando made 12-of-21 shots in the period while Detroit was just 6-of-20.
