GAME RECAP

Isaiah Rider hit a 17-foot jumper with 6.6 seconds left and Kenny Anderson scored 24 points as the Portland Trail Blazers edged the Houston Rockets, 86-85, for their third straight win.

Rider's jumper capped a tight fourth quarter in which neither team led by more than two points down the stretch. The final 2:31 saw three lead changes and two ties, as well as a shot by Houston's Charles Barkley that bounced off the front of the rim as time expired.

"This is hard to take, especially with four days off," said Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich. "We did everything we could to give it away."

With 45 seconds left, Barkley put back a miss by Hakeem Olajuwon to break an 83-83 deadlock. Rider hit one of two free throws 12 seconds later to halve the deficit before Clyde Drexler missed an off-balance jumper with 15 seconds remaining. Without calling timeout, Portland charged down the floor and Rider hit the game-winner from the left side.

"I told the guys that if we got the ball out quick in transition, then just to take it," said Portland coach Mike Dunleavy. "If we didn't get a quick shot, then I was going to call time out."

"It was a big shot for me," Rider said. "I was really disappointed after I missed the free throw and didn't tie the game. I was glad to get the opportunity to shoot it, and was real focused."

Rider added 23 points for the Blazers, who won despite going without a field goal for the first 5:20 of the fourth quarter.

Olajuwon scored 27 points and Barkley added 14 and 14 rebounds, but connected on just 4-of-19 shots from the field. The Rockets hit 21 percent (3-of-14) of their field-goal attempts in the fourth quarter and shot just 37 percent (28-of-75) overall.

"The guy stripped me in the lane, and that messed up the timing," said Barkley of his missed shot at the end. "It was a tough shot, but I missed it. It was a really bad night."

Houston led 72-69 after three quarters and scored the first five points of the fourth to build an eight-point lead. But with 6:40 left, Wallace's layup ignited a 12-3 run which gave Portland an 81-80 advantage. Rider and Anderson each had five points in the spurt.

Drexler made a free throw to force a tie with 2:10 left and followed a pair of Wallace's foul line misses with a bucket, putting the Rockets ahead with 98 seconds to go. But Anderson's basket 21 seconds later knotted it 83-83.

Arvydas Sabonis had 11 points and 16 rebounds and Brian Grant added 10 and a career-high 19 as the Trailblazers enjoyed a 54-35 edge on the boards. Portland's 16 offensive rebounds led to 20 second-chance points.

"We've got a lot of talent on this team," said Anderson. "We've got what you want at all the positions. We've got a good team, and we have a lot of confidence."

Drexler finished with just 10 points after going for 43 in Wednesday night's win over the Clippers. Mario Elie chipped in 14 and Kevin Willis added nine off the bench.
