GAME RECAP

Stephon Marbury scored 10 points of his 26 points in a key fourth-quarter run, leading the Minnesota Timberwolves to a 108-87 victory over the Vancouver Grizzlies.

Marbury was 12-of-18 from the field and contributed 10 assists. His driving layup capped a 21-4 burst and gave the Timberwolves their biggest lead, 102-85, with 3:41 remaining. He made 5-of-6 shots from the field during a fourth quarter in which the Timberwolves shot 56 percent (9-of-16).

"The amazing thing is Steph got down on the basket and there was no one within eight feet of him," said Minnesota coach Flip Saunders. "He has the kind of ability to take over a game down the stretch like that."

Kevin Garnett came close to recording his first career triple-double with 19 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists. Tom Gugliotta had 21 points and nine rebounds for Minnesota, which was 20-of-23 from the free-throw line, making its first 17 attempts.

"We're one of the teams that get away from our killer instincts when we're ahead," Garnett said. "Tonight was a night where we got in the huddle, buckled everyone down and went for it. Steph got it going, Googs got it going and Doug (West) and Sam (Mitchell) hit a couple of shots. As a team, we did good things at the end."

Shareef Abdur-Rahim had 23 points and a career-high 18 rebounds for the Grizzlies, who suffered their third straight loss. Bryant Reeves recorded 19 points and nine rebounds and Otis Thorpe had 12 and eight for Vancouver, which lost by more than eight points for the first time this season. Rookie guard Antonio Daniels had 12 points and 11 assists but could not contain Marbury.

"It's hard to guard somebody when they play around screens," Daniels said of Marbury. "When he can sit out top, you have to respect his jump shot, but he's got me 1-on-1 and he just kept going one way or another and kept me of balance."

"Our game plan fell apart," Abdur-Rahim said. "I think we did a good job most of the game, but we weren't able to sustain it. Marbury kind of got out of hand near the end. Garnett and Gugliotta are going to get their points and we kept them above their average, but Marbury really hurt us."

The Grizzlies tied the score for the final time, 81-81, when George Lynch made a pair of free throws with 9:26 remaining. Terry Porter answered with two free throws to start Minnesota's run.

Garnett had 13 points and Gugliotta added 12 as the Wolves took a 53-42 lead at halftime. Reeves made a layup to cap a 9-2 surge and cut Minnesota's lead to 67-59 with 5:11 left in the third quarter. Blue Edwards made a 16-footer with 36 seconds left and Vancouver trailed, 77-73, at the end of three.
