GAME RECAP

Chris Gatling scored 24 points, including New Jersey's first seven of the third quarter, and Kendall Gill added 19 as the Nets stayed perfect on the season with a 99-87 victory over the Miami Heat.

The Nets continued to impress, beating their best opponent yet to improve to 4-0, their best start since joining the NBA.

New Jersey trailed, 49-45, entering the third quarter until Gatling took control. He singlehandedly outscored the Heat, 7-2, over the first 2:29 of the second half to put the Nets ahead for good.

"I think tonight shows our energy level," Gatling said. "We were the aggressor, we just tried to stay on them because Miami is a great team, but we kept our composure."

Gatling pulled down 12 rebounds and Sam Cassell and Jayson Williams scored 18 points apiece as New Jersey handed the Heat their first road loss of the season.

"We played incredibly horrible in the second half," said Heat coach Pat Riley. "We just did not focus or concentrate in the second half. You cannot turn it over or put them on the free throw line all the time."

Isaac Austin scored 21 points and Tim Hardaway added 20 -- only four in the second half -- for Miami. Jamal Mashburn, coming off his best effort as a member of the Heat, was held to 12 points.

Miami was able to get as close as six points in the fourth quarter after Eric Murdock hit a pair of free throws with 1:52 left. But David Benoit drained a foul-line jumper and Cassell sank a basket to extend New Jersey's lead to 96-86 with 1:34 remaining.

Hardaway scored 10 points as the Heat took a 28-17 lead after one quarter. But the Nets regrouped and came out strong in the second. Kendall Gill's drive to the hoop 77 seconds into the period triggered a 15-4 burst, capped by Gatling's six-footer midway through the period for a 33-32 New Jersey lead.

"I think they expected us to go away," said Gill. "They thought we were not for real. We weathered the storm after they came out hitting the j's (jumpers). We didn't let them back in it. Defensively that was the best we have ever played."

The Heat shot 47 percent (27-of-57) from the field, but made just 8-of-13 free throw attempts. Miami also committed 21 turnovers, leading to 26 points.
