GAME RECAP

Kenny Anderson scored 28 points and Isaiah Rider added 24 as the Portland Trail Blazers used a big third-quarter run and clutch free throw shooting down the stretch to defeat the Dallas Mavericks, 104-94.

Arvydas Sabonis added 20 points and 16 rebounds and combined with Anderson to make six free throws in the final minute as Portland remained unbeaten in three road games this season.

"We did what we had to do to win a game," said Anderson. "They're a feisty team, they're new and improved. They play hard and they never give up."

Shawn Bradley recorded 26 points, 10 rebounds and seven blocked shots and Michael Finley had 21 points for Dallas, which lost its second straight after opening the season with three wins.

"We started off 3-0 and we've dropped two straight so what we have to do is regroup and go from there," said Dallas coach Jim Cleamons. "We have to learn to continue to play together."

"We're still young and we're still learning and we've got to get to know each other," Bradley said. "It's a long rebuilding process. We won a big game early (against Seattle) and what we have to do is take that momentum and work off of it."

Dallas held a 58-49 lead midway through the third before Portland used an 18-4 burst to take the lead for good. Rasheed Wallace, who had 12 points, capped the run with a turnaround dunk for a 67-62 lead with 2:18 to go in the third.

The Mavericks closed the deficit to 90-86 when Khalid Reeves sank a three-pointer with 2:33 remaining. But Sabonis answered with a pair of free throws and Wallace had a dunk off an alley-oop pass, giving the Blazers a 94-86 advantage with 1:52 to go.

Sabonis, who was 7-of-8 from the line, made one free throw for a 95-86 lead with 1:25 left. Finley's layin cut Portand's lead to 95-88 with 42 seconds remaining. Anderson made a pair of free throws and Bradley answered with a three-pointer from the top of the key to pull the Mavericks within 97-91. But Sabonis and Anderson each made two free throws around a three-pointer by Finley for the final margin. Anderson finished 12-of-12 from the free-throw line.

"Bradley was as tough as anybody in the low post that we've seen all year," said Portland coach Mike Dunleavy. "He was making shots when he didn't have position and he buried that last three on us. He played a heck of a game. I had no problem with the defense we were playing on him. They were all contested shots."

Portland shot 87 percent (27-for-31) from the free-throw line and defeated Dallas for the fourth time in the last five meetings.
