GAME RECAP

Steve Kerr scored 21 points and Toni Kukoc added 17 as the Chicago Bulls continued their home dominance over the upstart New Jersey Nets while handing them their first loss of the season, 99-86.

Kerr connected on 8-of-13 from the field, including a 4-of-6 from three-point range. It was three points below his career high, which he reached with the Orlando Magic on April 17th, 1992.

"It was one of those nights where not only my shots felt good, but rebounds seemed to land in my lap," said Kerr, who had six boards. "I was a little worried during warmups because we didn't seem to have any fire. But we certainly created a lot of shots and kept New Jersey off the boards."

The win was Chicago's sixth straight over the Nets at the United Center, where New Jersey has not won since December 5th, 1994.

"Tonight our offense was quick and we controlled the boards," Chicago coach Phil Jackson said. "It was a big game for us, particularly after a very disappointing game (an 80-78 loss at Atlanta) last night."

The Nets, who were riding the best start in franchise history, trailed by 14 points midway through the third quarter before pulling within 74-66 on Kendall Gill's buzzer-beater to end the period.

But the Bulls scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter, capped by Scott Burrell's layup, for an 82-66 advantage three minutes in. New Jersey closed within 10, but never threatened.

"Chicago is just a great club. They defend and force you out of everything you want to do," said Nets coach John Calipari. "Even though they beat us soundly tonight, I like the way that we hung in there. We were down eight in the fourth -- a year ago that might have been 38."

Sam Cassell scored 19 points and Gill added 17 for New Jersey, which was destroyed on the boards, 48-27.

The Nets scored the first basket 59 seconds into the game but were held without a field goal for the next 3:23 as the Bulls took an 11-5 lead. New Jersey battled back, but Michael Jordan's nine points helped Chicago to a 26-24 lead after one quarter.

New Jersey forged a 30-30 tie on David Benoit's 15-footer 3:22 into the second, but Ron Harper triggered a 7-0 spurt with a jumper that put the Bulls ahead for good.

Dennis Rodman, who after Friday's loss to Atlanta said he had given no effort, bounced back with seven points and 12 rebounds. Jordan finished with 15 and Harper added 14 for Chicago.

Chris Gatling had 15 points and nine rebounds for New Jersey and Jayson Williams added 12 points. Williams, who leads the Nets with 14.5 rebounds per game, grabbed just one board.

"They haven't lost two games in a row since I don't remember when, that's why they continue to be world champions," Williams said. "They took us out of our offense and they certainly pushed me around to the point where I didn't get my rebounds. We played hard, but they are a better team than we are right now."

The Bulls avoided consecutive losses since the final two games of last season.

The Bulls built a 16-point lead in the fourth before Sherman Douglas' layup cut it to 84-74 with 7:04 left. But Chicago went on a 9-5 run over the next 5 1/2 minutes to ice it.
