GAME RECAP

Jason Kidd scored 18 of his 29 points in the first half and handed out eight assists as the Phoenix Suns routed the Los Angeles Clippers, 123-105.

Former Clipper Danny Manning had 15 of his 21 points in the first half for the Suns, who raced to a 68-48 advantage in their first road game of the season. Rex Chapman finished with 20 points as Phoenix downed Los Angeles for the second time this season.

Rodney Rogers scored 23 points and Brent Barry chipped in with 18 for the Clippers, who were playing the first of six games this season at the Pond in Anaheim.

A jumper by Barry cut the Suns' lead to 35-30 with 10:17 left in the second quarter. But Manning converted a three-point play 14 seconds later to ignite a 9-2 burst, which Kidd capped with a jumper off the break for a 44-32 lead with 7:52 remaining in the half.

Rookie Maurice Taylor's jumper got the Clippers back within 10, but Kidd made consecutive layups to spark a 12-3 spurt. After Rogers made one free throw, Clifford Robinson and Antonio McDyess threw down consecutive dunks to push Phoenix's advantage to 52-35 with 5:07 to go in the period.

"I got a lot of looks," Kidd said. "They got me the ball and tonight it was my job to shoot. Most nights I like to pass, but tonight they let me shoot."

A pair of free throws by rookie Keith Closs made it a 15-point game before Steve Nash buried consecutive jumpers to cap the run. Phoenix continued to pour it on as Manning scored the last six Suns' points in the half, making it 68-48.

"That's one thing about this team -- we are not selfish," Manning said. "If a guy gets hot we try to give him the ball."

The Clippers closed within 10 points after consecutive baskets by Lamond Murray with 6:17 left in the third quarter, but Chapman had five points in a 10-2 burst to push the lead back to 91-73 with four minutes remaining in the period. Los Angeles would not get closer than 12 points thereafter and Phoenix's lead grew as large as 24 points in the final period.

"I'm not happy with our basketball team right now," Los Angeles coach Bill Fitch said. "Our defense is hurting us."

Robinson had 17 points and Nash 10 for the Suns, who shot 56 percent (46-of-82) from the field.

Murray finished with 14 points and Darrick Martin 13 for the Clippers, who shot 42.5 percent (37-for-87).
