GAME RECAP

Shaquille O'Neal scored 27 points and grabbed 19 rebounds in just 29 minutes and Kobe Bryant added a career-high 25 points as the unbeaten Los Angeles Lakers pounded the winless Golden State Warriors, 132-97.

Rick Fox chipped in with 22 points and Eddie Jones had 15 for the Lakers, who defeated the Warriors for the eighth straight time, dating back to November 11th, 1995.

Los Angeles joined the Atlanta Hawks as the only undefeated teams in the NBA. At 4-0, the Lakers are off to their best start since winning their first eight games in 1987-88 -- the last time they won the NBA championship.

"We're developing a new formula," O'Neal said. "It's a very simple one. Win all our home games, beat the teams we're supposed to beat and stay above .500 on the road. If we can do that, then we should have a pretty good standing going into the playoffs."

Joe Smith scored 20 points and newly acquired Tony Delk added 14 off the bench for the hapless Warriors (0-6), who continued the worst start in franchise history.

"It's not the way we want to start the season," Smith said. "But we have a lot of new players. It's going to take time for the chemistry. We're still trying to get used to one another, but after we do we have potential to have a good team."

The Lakers led by just three after the first quarter before blowing it open in the second. Bryant scored nine points, including the final six, in a 15-4 burst that gave the Lakers a 44-30 lead with 5:53 left in the first half.

Jones took over from there, scoring 10 points in the final 5 1/2 minutes as Los Angeles built a 61-46 halftime lead. Jones had 12 points in the half, O'Neal and Bryant 11 each and Nick Van Exel chipped in with 10.

The Lakers turned it into a laugher in the third quarter behind O'Neal, who scored seven points in a 12-0 spurt that opened the period. His dunk on the break capped the run as Los Angeles opened a 72-46 bulge with 8:33 remaining in the third. The lead grew to 27 points entering the fourth quarter.

"It felt pretty good," Van Exel said. "The blowout, we needed that one. It's early, we played a team that didn't put much effort into the game. Maybe it was because of us or maybe it was because they didn't care. Whatever it is, we'll take it."

"Everything is disturbing," Golden State coach P.J. Carlesimo said. "I thought the guys out there were competing. I didn't have a problem with that. LA is a great team and I've said it repeatedly. We're just not playing well and we have a long way to go and a lot of things to work on."

Mario Bennett scored 11 points in just six minutes off the bench as the Lakers' lead swelled to 36 points in the final period. Los Angeles shot 54 percent (49-for-91) and held a 54-44 rebounding advantage.

Van Exel finished with 12 points and Derek Fisher had a career-high 10 assists. Bryant left in the fourth quarter with a moderately sprained ankle.

Donyell Marshall had 12 points and nine rebounds for the Warriors, who shot 39 percent (41-for-104). All-Star guard Latrell Sprewell finished with just 10 points. After pouring in 70 points over the first two games of the season, his is averaging just 12.5 per game over the last four.
