GAME RECAP

Kenny Anderson scored 15 of his 29 points in the fourth quarter and added 11 assists as the Portland Trail Blazers won their fifth straight game, 86-82, over the Detroit Pistons, who have dropped five straight.

Anderson, who is averaging 25 points per game during the winning streak, scored the Trail Blazers' first seven points of the fourth quarter and their final five points of the period.

Arvydas Sabonis had 20 points and Isaiah Rider 12 for the Blazers, who erased a 15-point second-quarter deficit and remained unbeaten since an opening night loss to Seattle on October 31st. At 5-1, the Blazers are off to their best start since winning their first six games of the 1992-93 season.

"We're a little tired, sluggish, but it tells you something about this team," Anderson said. "We've matured a lot after last year. Down 12 or 13 last year, we might have cracked. This year we stayed together, that's what makes wins like this so much better."

Grant Hill scored 21 points and Brian Williams contributed 19 for the Pistons (2-5). Hill, who shot just 6-of-21 in Sunday's loss to Vancouver, was held to 6-of-19, mostly by former Piston Stacey Augmon.

"Stacey Augmon did a tremendous job in guarding Grant Hill down the stretch," Portland coach Mike Dunleavy said. "The way we handled him was obviously a big factor in our turnaround."

"He does a real good job," Hill said. "It seems like the guys we get rid of come back to haunt us."

Detroit led, 62-60, entering the fourth quarter, but Anderson opened the period with a bucket and buried a three-pointer to give the Blazers a 65-62 lead with 10:42 to play. Detroit regained a one-point lead after one free throw by Grant Long and two by Malik Sealy, but Anderson hit a pair of foul shots to give the Portland the lead for good, 67-66, with 6:19 to play.

Portland built the lead to four points before Williams drew the sixth foul on Sabonis and made one free throw to cut the deficit to 72-69. But Anderson responded by pulling up for a three-pointer, increasing the Blazers' lead to 75-69 with 4:02 to go.

"Kenny Anderson was spectacular," Detroit coach Doug Collins said. "It's the best I've ever seen him play."

Detroit closed within two after Hill's runner in the lane, but a bucket in the lane by Augmon and a free throw by Anderson made it 82-77. Williams' put-back with 14 seconds remaining again made it a three-point game, but Anderson hit a pair from the line two seconds later for an 84-79 lead. Anderson hit two more free throws after a three-pointer by Lindsey Hunter for the final margin.

The Pistons raced to a 27-20 lead after one quarter behind nine points from Hill. Detroit increased its lead to 35-20 with 9:32 left in the half on a basket by Long and still had a 12-point lead at halftime. Rider scored nine points in the third quarter, helping Portland get within two points entering the fourth.

Rasheed Wallace finished with 10 points for Portland, which shot 40 percent (26-for-65) from the field and outrebounded Detroit, 43-41. The Blazers have outrebounded their opponents in all six games.

Hunter scored 12 points and Theo Ratliff collected 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Pistons, who shot 37 percent (28-for-76). The Pistons were without veteran guard Joe Dumars, who left Sunday's loss at Vancouver in the second quarter with a strained left shoulder.
