GAME RECAP

Isaac Austin scored 24 points -- two shy of his career high -- and P.J. Brown established a career high with 18 rebounds as the Miami Heat defeated the hapless Sacramento Kings, 101-82.

Mark Strickland added a career-high 14 points for the Heat, who have won three straight against the Kings and are 9-2 all-time at home against Sacramento. Miami broke open a tight game with a 7-0 burst late in the first quarter and used an 18-4 spurt midway through the second period to establish a double-digit lead it would not relinquish.

"It was a solid game for us," said Heat coach Pat Riley, who tied Jack Ramsay for fifth on the all-time coaching list with 864 victories. "We were solid except for the third quarter when we turned it over 11 times. We got great performances by Ike, who was very strong in posting, and P.J. Brown off the boards."

Mitch Richmond and Lawrence Funderburke scored 15 points apiece for the Kings, who have dropped five of their first six games. Richmond, the subject of trade rumors, has led the team in scoring in each contest.

"Everything went wrong tonight," said Kings coach Eddie Jordan. "We had talked about what they were going to do at practice and everything still went wrong. There are no excuses, I refuse to use travel as an excuse and I don't want anyone else to either."

"This was a game where Miami outplayed us on both ends of the court," Richmond said. "They went on a big run that hurt us near the end of the first half."

Austin, filling in for the injured Alonzo Mourning, made 12-of-18 shots, grabbed nine rebounds and added three steals. Mourning is out until December recovering from knee surgery.

Brown, who had 10 points and blocked a pair of shots, led a solid effort on the boards as Miami held a 47-32 edge. Miami also was without starting small forward Jamal Mashburn, who has a sprained right ankle.

"We emphasize defense and our motto in practice yesterday was that we are starting over," said Brown. "Their front line isn't as big as ours so I tried to establish myself on the boards."

The game also marked one of Miami's better defensive efforts of the young season as they held Sacramento to just 44 percent shooting and forced 21 turnovers. The Heat also allowed less than 99 points for just the second time in seven games.

"Everyone was looking for me down low and I had good shots that were going down," Austin said. "Without Mash we lost 20 to 22 points so we had to step it up. I posted deep and they let me."

The Heat broke open a 17-16 contest with a 7-0 run that was capped by Voshon Lenard's three-pointer with 97 seconds left in the first quarter. The Kings were able to draw within 35-31 with 6:33 left in the half but Miami went on an 18-4 spurt that gave them an 18-point lead with 2:16 left in the half. Austin had eight points during the burst, which was capped by Strickland's layup.

The Heat led by as many as 22 in the second half and the Kings were unable to get closer than 14 over the final 12 minutes.
