GAME RECAP

Lindsey Hunter scored 11 of his 22 points in the third quarter as the Detroit Pistons snapped a five-game losing streak with a 102-71 rout of the winless Golden State Warriors, who own the league's worst record.

Detroit held a slim 39-35 halftime edge but opened the third period with a 9-4 spurt, capped by Hunter's 12-foot jumper with 10 minutes left. Hunter's driving layup built the lead to 66-49 with 4:52 remaining in the quarter.

Brian Williams had 19 points and nine rebounds and Malik Sealy added 16 points as the Pistons (3-5) won their fifth straight meeting with the Warriors. Grant Hill was just 4-of-19 from the field but finished with 13 points and 13 assists for Detroit, which wraps up a four-game road trip Thursday at Seattle.

"It feels like the weight of the world is off our back, not just because we won, but we played well," Hill said. "We didn't do things ultimately like we would have liked to, nevertheless, we still got a win and we got that feeling back."

Latrell Sprewell and Joe Smith scored 14 points apiece for Golden State which made just 4-of-18 shots in the fourth quarter and fell to 0-7.

The Warriors, who have lost their last two games by a combined 66 points, matched the third-lowest scoring output in team history. Denver (0-5) is the only other winless team in the league after Philadelphia's victory over Houston.

Sprewell, the Warriors' leading scorer, did not start as a result of disciplinary action taken by the team after he was thrown out of practice on Tuesday. He entered midway through the first quarter.

When asked about the Sprewell situation, Warriors coach P.J. Carlesimo responded, "We want to keep it private. If I wanted to tell you (the media) I would. You can criticize me for a stupid policy and you can even speculate."

Neither team led by more than five points in the first half, but a pair of free throws by Hunter with 46 seconds left gave Detroit a four-point halftime edge.

"Right now we're beaten down and it's hard for us, but I thought for most of the first half that our effort was very good," Carlesimo said. "It's hard to play when you are not getting anything and that's what happened to us in the second half."

Hill, who also had five steals, handed out five assists in the third quarter, helping the Pistons to a 73-55 lead heading into the final period. His layup with 7:59 left in the game capped a 10-2 spurt and built an 83-57 cushion.

"Our second team gave us some energy and toughness and finally some shots started falling down," Pistons coach Doug Collins said. "I think anytime you start losing some games, guys start getting tight."

Detroit shot 48 percent (35-for-73) and limited the Warriors to 37 percent (29-of-79) shooting, including an 0-for-7 performance by Donyell Marshall. The Pistons, who have won three straight games at Golden State, owned a 48-36 edge on the boards.

"The loss here was as embarassing as a 30-point loss on the road," Marshall said. "You know, we were there in the first half, and we just let it go. We tried our hardest in the first quarter and a half and we didn't come with it all the way."
