GAME RECAP

Nick Van Exel scored a season-high 35 points, including 12 in the overtime periods, as the Los Angeles Lakers continued their best start in a decade with a 113-103 double-overtime victory over the struggling Houston Rockets.

Shaquille O'Neal added 24 points, 13 rebounds and a career high-tying eight assists for the Lakers, who posted their second straight overtime victory to keep pace with the Atlanta Hawks as the NBA's only remaining unbeaten teams. At 7-0, the Lakers are off to their best start since winning their first eight games in 1987-88 -- the last time they won the NBA championship.

"We've come out every night and played well," O'Neal said. "We're on a mission this year. We fell short last year but we're trying to get to the promised land."

Clyde Drexler tried to carry the Rockets, scoring 29 of his 35 points after intermission and grabbing 10 rebounds. Kevin Willis added 20 points and Charles Barkley, whose fallaway jumper forced double overtime, added 15 and 22 rebounds.

"We had our chances but they hit the big shots," Drexler said. "We have to do some soul searching. I'm very concerned at this point. To be under .500 after seven games ... we have too much talent for that."

Hakeem Olajuwon sat out most of the second half and finished with just four points and eight rebounds for Houston. It was his lowest point total since he scored four points at Cleveland on February 16th, 1985. At 3-4, the Rockets are under .500 for the first time since they were 15-16 on January 10th, 1993.

"Every player has a game when they can't get the ball in," Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "I was going to get him back in and he told me to stick with the guys that had made the comeback. I thought that was a very professional move."

"Hakeem looked like he was out of sync and they got a rhythm going with a different lineup," Los Angeles coach Del Harris said. "Rudy decided to stick with that. I've done that as well. Even great players have an off night."

Van Exel scored five straight points in the first overtime, but Houston closed within 101-99 on a long three-pointer by Mario Elie with 26 seconds left. After a turnover, Drexler missed a potential go-ahead three-pointer and the ball went out of bounds with 3.4 seconds remaining.

Emanual Davis knocked former Rocket Robert Horry's inbounds pass off Eddie Jones out of bounds in the backcourt. Rookie Rodrick Rhodes heaved the inbounds pass to Barkley, who nailed the baseline fadeaway shot.

Van Exel began the second overtime with his sixth three-pointer, but Davis made a pair of free throws for the Rockets' last points. O'Neal made a pair of foul shots after fouling out Willis, and Olajuwon got off the bench for the first time since early in the fourth quarter.

After Jones followed his own miss, Van Exel made two free throws for a 110-103 advantage with 1:43 to play. Elden Campbell added one free throw and Van Exel two more for the final margin.

A three-pointer by Van Exel gave the Lakers their largest lead at 56-38 with under 10 minutes left in the third quarter. Los Angeles still had a 17-point lead after Jones' three-pointer with 5:18 remaining in the period before Drexler brought Houston back. He scored eight points in the third period as the Rockets closed within 69-60 entering the fourth.

Behind seven points from Drexler, Houston scored the first 12 points of the fourth quarter, grabbing a 72-69 lead on Willis' tip-in with 9:38 to go in regulation. Drexler scored 18 points in the period, helping the Rockets to a 91-88 lead with 15 seconds left. But Van Exel drilled a three-pointer from the left side to force the overtime.

"It takes guts, but I don't think about it," Van Exel said. "If it goes in it's a great shot and if you miss it, well, somebody had to take it."

Jones finished with 19 points and Campbell had nine points and eight rebounds for the Lakers, who shot 44 percent (41-for-94) from the field. Horry grabbed 12 rebounds.

Matt Maloney and Davis each scored 10 points for the Rockets, who shot 39 percent (37-of-94). Houston held a 61-43 rebounding advantage, but committed 22 turnovers, leading to 23 points.
