GAME RECAP

Karl Malone scored nine of his 23 points in the fourth quarter and Jeff Hornacek added 23 as the Utah Jazz flirted with disaster before pulling away from the Seattle SuperSonics for a 110-104 victory.

The Jazz led by 13 points at halftime and held an 81-69 lead after three quarters before Seattle made its move. The SuperSonics put together a 17-7 run to open the final period and pull within 88-86 with 6:55 left.

Utah's Bryon Russell, coming off the bench for the second straight game, followed with a layup and Malone hit a pair from the line for a 92-88 cushion with 5:14 to go. Detlef Schrempf's bucket narrowed the gap, but a basket by Antoine Carr and two more free throws by Malone put away Seattle.

"I've been trying to go to the boards more," said Hornacek. "Especially after the first three or four plays of the game, where I think every possession they got about five offensive rebounds."

Howard Eisley added a career-high 18 points, including three three-pointers, as Utah made 7-of-13 from behind the arc. Malone added 12 rebounds for the Jazz, who have won three of their last four games after dropping three of four.

"I try to hold my own every game I go out there and I think I can hold my own against anyone if I go out and play as well I can," said Eisley. "But you know Gary Payton is a very good ballplayer and you try not to let him dominate a ballgame."

Schrempf scored 26 points and Gary Payton chipped in 21 for Seattle, which fell to 4-2 on the road. Vin Baker finished with 13 points and 12 rebounds.

"They came out more aggressive than we did in the first half and got the early lead," said Baker. "We were fighting uphill from there on. We came out with passion in the second half, but they had built a comfortable lead and we just couldn't get back."

The Jazz were ahead 31-24 early in the second quarter before breaking open the game with a 17-4 burst. Russell scored 10 points in the run, including a eight-point spurt which included a layup and consecutive three-pointers. Russell hit 5-of-7 from the field for 17 points.

Greg Ostertag capped the run and gave Utah a 48-28 advantage by hitting 1-of-2 from the line with 6 1/2 minutes left in the period.

Both teams kept turnovers to a minimum. The Jazz had 11 and the SuperSonics committed just nine. Payton, who had just four assists, led all players with five turnovers. Payton also missed all five of his three-point attempts as Seattle went 4-of-19 from three-point range. He was outplayed by Eisley, who handed off six assists with only two turnovers.
