GAME RECAP

Dikembe Mutombo scored six of his 19 points in the fourth quarter and grabbed 14 rebounds as the Atlanta Hawks continued their perfect season by beating the Los Angeles Clippers for the seventh straight time, 89-83.

Atlanta has opened the season with 10 consecutive victories to remain unbeaten along with the Los Angeles Lakers (8-0), who tonight beat the Vancouver Grizzlies. The Hawks are four wins shy of their longest winning streak and five wins away from the best start in NBA history.

"Every team that comes in is going to try to knock us off," Hawks coach Lenny Wilkens said. "We didn't have one of our better games. But the key is that we have to stay focused down the stretch, we've got to make smart plays."

Atlanta, which won a franchise-best 14 straight games during the 1993 season, is trying to match the best start in league history set by the Washington Capitals in 1948 and matched by the Houston Rockets in 1993.

Mutombo hit a hook shot to give Atlanta the lead for good, 73-72, with 7:34 to play. That came in the midst of a 13-4 run that opened the fourth quarter. Mutombo's foul shot capped the spurt for a 76-72 edge with 5:53 to go.

"We knew that we were going to win. I think that's why we ended up letting the game get as close as we did," Mutombo said. "I'm glad we were able to finish strong. We have to be careful against teams that are below .500 because they have nothing to lose."

Steve Smith scored 19 points and sank four free throws in the final seconds and Tyrone Corbin added six of his 13 in the fourth quarter for the Hawks, who have won four straight at home against the Clippers.

"We're just happy to get out to a big lead," Smith said of the Hawks' fast start. "You never know what the game might mean at the end of the season. We just wanted to get out to a good lead."

Brent Barry scored 21 points and Darrick Martin had 12 of his season-high 19 in the third quarter for Los Angeles, which has dropped five straight games.

Corbin hit two free throws with 3:18 remaining before Martin answered with a three-pointer to pull the Clippers within 82-79. But Atlanta drained enough free throws down the stretch to hold on for the victory.

"You can't be 10-0 if you don't have a team that can execute in the fourth quarter," Clippers coach Bill Fitch said of the Hawks. "We made a couple of turnovers and gave them a little life, but they executed well, too. Not that we were that poor, but they proved why they got to 10."

The Hawks made 37-of-45 (82 percent) from the foul line but just 39 percent (25-of-64) from the field. Los Angeles shot 40 percent (32-of-80) from the floor.

The Clippers trailed 45-39 at the half but opened the third quarter with a 10-2 spurt. Martin drained two straight three-pointers to tie the game, 47-47, and Barry sank two foul shots to put Los Angeles in front.

After the Hawks regained the lead on free throws by Corbin and Mutombo, Barry's bucket put the Clippers back on top and they they took a 68-63 lead into the final 12 minutes.

"This isn't a moral victory. We're beyond that," Barry said. "Regardless of those guys being undefeated, we had a chance to win the basketball game. We're a team that's struggling right now."

"They came back with a spurt. The Clippers pushed the ball," Smith said. "But we stuck in there and in the fourth quarter we said, 'Let's play a little defense.' And Dikembe got us going and we won it from there."

Los Angeles scored the game's first basket but Atlanta reeled off the next 10 points. Christian Laettner scored four of those and finished with eight of his 13 in the period, helping the Hawks to a 23-17 lead.

Rodney Rogers, who entered the game as the Clippers' leading scorer, chipped in 10 points but left in the third quarter with a knee injury. Teammate Lamond Murray departed with a back injury when he was undercut by Hawks forward Alan Henderson, who twisted his ankle in the fourth quarter and left in a wheelchair.
