GAME RECAP

Cliff Robinson's foul-line jumper with less than a second to play capped a rally from a 16-point second-half deficit and gave the Phoenix Suns a 96-94 victory over the struggling Houston Rockets.

The Rockets trailed 94-91 before Clyde Drexler tied it with a three-pointer with 14 seconds to go. After a timeout, the Suns inbounded in the backcourt and Kevin Johnson penetrated to the right and passed back to the foul line to Robinson, who made the shot with three-tenths of a second remaining.

"It was set up for KJ to come off and try to get an open shot, but they stepped towards him," Robinson said. "He was to pass it back and he did a good job of delivering the pass."

Johnson had a season-high 30 points, 10 rebounds and six assists for the Suns (6-1), who have won four straight games and are off to their best start in 13 years. Phoenix also opened 6-1 in the 1984-85 season.

"It's always fun to win a game when you don't play your best," said Phoenix coach Danny Ainge. "We struggled a lot, especially with our shots. In the second half, we pursued well on defense and our pressure picked up."

Johnson moved past Nate Archibald into 10th place all-time in assists with 6,480. Robinson scored just seven points, but his shot saved both teams a second straight overtime game. Phoenix won in four overtimes in Portland on Friday and Houston was beaten in double-overtime by the Los Angeles Lakers, also Friday.

"Kevin (Johnson) was the best player on the court tonight," Ainge said. "He came up huge when we needed him. It is good that we don't have to use KJ every game, but it is nice to have him there."

Hakeem Olajuwon had 22 points and 12 rebounds for the Rockets, bouncing back from a four-point effort against the Lakers, his lowest total in 13 years. But he could not prevent Houston from losing its fourth straight game.

Olajuwon's two free throws gave the Rockets an 87-83 lead with 3:29 left, but the Suns tied it on baskets by Hot Rod Williams and Johnson. The teams traded hoops before a three-pointer by Steve Nash bounced off the back of the rim, 12 feet into the air and dropped through to give Phoenix a 92-89 lead with 1:18 left.

Drexler scored eight seconds later, but missed two free throws with 46 seconds remaining. Danny Manning's basket restored the three-point lead before Drexler's three-pointer tied it.

Jason Kidd had 21 points, seven assists and seven rebounds for the Suns, who shot 43 percent (37-of-86) from the field. Rex Chapman added 11 points and Manning 10.

Brent Price scored 13 points and Drexler, Charles Barkley and Kevin Willis added 12 apiece for the Rockets, who shot 44 percent (33-of-75). Barkley, a former Sun, scored all of his points in the first period and departed with a left groin injury with 4:41 to play.

"We found ways to lose this one," Drexler said. "This is four in a row ... things are going bad right now. Turnovers, missed opportunities and missed free throws -- you name it, we had so many chances ... we are searching for an answer and we hope we find it soon."

Olajuwon scored 11 points in the second quarter -- two less than Phoenix's total -- as Houston roared to a 50-36 halftime lead. The Rockets opened their largest lead at 61-45 on Matt Maloney's three-pointer with 8:11 left in the third quarter.

Two free throws by rookie Rodrick Rhodes had Houston holding a 70-58 lead with 2:21 left. But Johnson scored four points and Kidd two in a six-point flurry that cut the deficit in half entering the final 12 minutes.
