GAME RECAP

Blue Edwards scored a season-high 27 points off the bench and Shareef Abdur-Rahim added 19 to lead the Vancouver Grizzlies to their first road win of the season, 100-87 over the winless Denver Nuggets.

George Lynch tallied 11 points for the Grizzlies, who have won two of their last three games and improved to 1-4 on the road. Vancouver, which is 5-6 overall, did not win its fifth game last season until December 17th. The Grizzlies shot 47 percent (36-for-76) from the field, including 6-of-12 from three-point range. Vancouver received 53 points from its bench.

"I'm happy with the win," said Vancouver coach Brian Hill. "It's a coach's nightmare to come in and play a team looking for their first win. ... We got a great job from our bench, 53 points. You gain a lot from a game like this. We continued to play aggressively. We're getting better but we still have a long way to go. Blue Edwards had it going, he was the guy ending up with the open shot."

Rookie Bobby Jackson scored 18 points for the Nuggets, who dropped to 0-9, extending the worst start in team history. LaPhonso Ellis, making his first start of the season, recorded 17 points and eight rebounds and Dean Garrett added 13 and 11 for Denver, which lost for just the third time in nine all-time meetings with Vancouver.

"Phons' (Ellis) start was the highlight but we should have had a bigger lead in the first quarter than we did," said Denver coach Bill Hanzlik. "Our offense then went haywire and we just started standing around. Everything we did tonight went wrong. I told the guys to be ready for practice at 10:00 (am) and we're just going to work on the fundamentals. Tonight was unacceptable. That's not Nuggets basketball."

Edwards made a three-pointer to give the Nuggets the lead for good, 40-37, with 3:46 left in the second quarter. Rookie Antonio Daniels, who had six points, completed a fast break with a layup for a 50-41 lead with 56 seconds left in the first half. Ellis sank a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to 50-43 with 18.3 seconds to go, but Vancouver took a nine-point lead to the intermission when Bryant Reeves had a tip-in with three-tenths of a second left.

"Our bench has been solid all year," Edwards said. "We're not trying to do too much. We want to maintain the same tempo as established or turn it up a notch. Our bench is playing well, we've all been in the league a while and we have great chemistry. Each game we have, success breeds more success."

The Nuggets cut the deficit to 56-52 on a free throw by Garrett with 8:44 left in the third. But Abdur-Rahim answered with a layup and a dunk to give the Grizzlies a 60-52 lead with 8:04 to go. Vancouver maintained at least a five-point lead throughout the third and began the fourth with an 8-0 spurt, capped by Lee Mayberry's three-pointer for a 79-64 advantage with 9:14 remaining.

The Grizzlies had their biggest lead at 87-68 when Edwards sank a three-pointer with 7:26 left.
