GAME RECAP

Isaac Austin scored 14 of his career-high 26 points in a record-setting first quarter as the Miami Heat matched the best start in franchise history with a 122-113 victory over the defenseless Los Angeles Clippers.

Tim Hardaway had a season-high 33 points, 11 assists and no turnovers for the Heat, who scored 45 points and built a 27-point lead in the opening period. Miami is 7-3, matching its starts in 1991 and 1995.

Heat coach Pat Riley celebrated the 16th anniversary of his coaching debut with his 866th career win. On November 19th, 1981, he took over for the fired Paul Westhead and began the "Showtime" era with the Los Angeles Lakers.

"Our starters were ready in the first quarter, then we began to play scoreboard," Riley said. "There was a lot of time left."

Lamond Murray scored a career-high 32 points for the Clippers, who have lost seven straight games. They are allowing nearly 109 points per game, the second-highest average in the league.

"They came out with the idea that we are a team that's down so they jumped on us," Clippers coach Bill Fitch said. "It could have been chaotic but we stayed in and battled. It is a humbling experience to have your head handed to you."

The Heat never trailed, opening leads of 11-2, 21-4, 26-6 and 45-18 in the first quarter. They widened the gap to 29 points early in the second period and the Clippers never got within single digits until the final two minutes.

"From the start, we really jumped on them," Austin said. "We showed a lot of poise on the defensive end. We came out with a lot of force and executed very well on offense but it is hard to maintain that concentration for 40 minutes. The coach got on us and told us we can't let them back in the game. When you play hard the game is very easy."

Jamal Mashburn scored seven of his 17 points in the 11-2 burst over the first three minutes. A jumper by Austin made it 21-4 with with 6:05 left and Austin's layup built the bulge to 20 points less than a minute later. A jumper by Terry Mills made it 45-18 with 34 seconds remaining.

"We made a lot of offensive plays," Mashburn said. "When you jump out on a team like that, sometimes that can be a bad thing. Championship teams like the Chicago Bulls have that inner drive and can maintain that intensity."

The bench came on in the second quarter but did not relent. A drive by Eric Murdock made it 51-22 with 10:59 to play in the period and a three-pointer by Todd Day gave Miami its largest lead at 58-29 with 8:42 to go.

Miami led 75-55 at halftime, falling a basket shy of the team record for points in a half. Austin scored 22 points to offset 17 by Murray.

"The first quarter was to big a hole to dig out of," Murray said. "We spent a whole night coming back and you can't do that and win. It is demoralizing when you're down by 30 points."

Two three-pointers and a dunk by James Robinson in an 8-0 spurt closed the Clippers within 79-69 with 7:55 left in the third quarter, but a three-pointer and layup by Hardaway rebuilt the lead to 92-76 with 4:07 remaining in the period.

"We got them down 27 and then we exhaled," Hardaway said. "It is tough to maintain that level of play. We can't let them come back. It wasn't our defense that let them back in the game, it was our offense. We were taking some bad shots and coach had a right to be made in the third quarter. We saw their game last night and jumped on them but they stayed the course."

P.J. Brown grabbed 10 rebounds for the Heat, who shot 52 percent (47-of-90) from the field and held a 46-35 rebounding edge. Miami made 21-of-24 free throws.

Robinson scored 16 points and Rodney Rogers added 15 for the Clippers, who shot 55 percent (45-of-92). Los Angeles' starters combined for 33 points, while the last four players off the bench combined for 73.
