GAME RECAP

Kenny Anderson scored 17 points and triggered a fourth-quarter surge as the Portland Trail Blazers, who blew a 20-point lead, rallied for a 93-87 victory over the slumping Detroit Pistons.

Isaiah Rider scored 28 points for the Trail Blazers, who won in Detroit for the first time in nearly three years and swept the season series. Portland has won eight of its last 10 overall.

"We had a 17-point lead at halftime, so we didn't want to come out and relax," Blazers coach Mike Dunleavy said. "We knew they would make a run. We just needed to withstand it. ... We bent but didn't break. It's a great road win for us."

Grant Hill and Malik Sealy scored 17 points apiece for the Pistons, who rallied to take the lead midway through the final period but lost for the eighth time in 10 games. Hill added seven rebounds and seven assists but shot 8-of-23 from the field.

"What happened tonight has been a microcosm of the entire season," Pistons coach Doug Collins said. "We're waiting for shots to go in instead of playing defense. We're 4-8 and the last six or seven losses have been identical."

Following the game, Collins had his team watch the last six minutes on videotape.

"We spent two years developing this and now we're losing this overnight," Collins said. "Two and a half years of work and it's going down in flames."

Held to eight points through three quarters, Anderson scored nine in the final period. After a three-point play by Brian Williams gave Detroit its first lead at 77-74 with 6:15 left, Anderson responded with a three-pointer and a jumper to give Portland the lead for good with 5:12 remaining.

"I didn't want to lose," Anderson said. "That was a big shot. That's what I'm about. That's when big players come through. That's what they brought me here to do. They were playing me tight on the threes and I just got that one in transition."

"We needed that out of Kenny," Rider said. "He's been in a slump. I'm glad he came through."

Portland's Rasheed Wallace and Detroit's Lindsey Hunter traded baskets before a dunk and layup by Brian Grant gave the Blazers an 85-79 lead with 3:33 to play. A dunk by Arvydas Sabonis capped the burst with 2:49 left.

Sabonis had 13 points and 14 rebounds and Grant added 12 and 10 for the Blazers, who shot 47 percent (34-of-72) from the field and held a 46-39 rebounding edge.

Williams had 15 points and 14 rebounds and Hunter scored 15 points for the Pistons, who shot 40 percent (35-of-87) and fell to 2-3 at home.

"Right now, we don't have an attitude," said Hill, still bothered by the flu. "We don't have an identity, a calling card we can rely on. We're just beating ourselves. For the most part, teams haven't beat us. We just make bad plays, start off bad. We're just not playing well."

Detroit shot 20 percent (4-of-20) in the first quarter and fell behind 23-12. Rider scored 14 points in the period, including the first six in an 18-2 spree bridging the first two periods. The burst was capped by a hoop by Gary Trent that gave Portland a 31-14 lead with 9:48 left in the first half.

A three-pointer by Rider gave the Blazers their largest lead at 42-22 with 6:14 to go. The Pistons cut the deficit to 53-36 at halftime, but a layup by Anderson restored the 17-point lead at 69-52 with 4:01 remaining in the third quarter.

Williams scored nine points and Hunter six in a 25-5 run. A basket by Hunter tied it with 8:04 to play and the three-point play by Williams gave Detroit its only lead.

"We came out in the third quarter and stopped converting," Rider added. "We had a lot of easy looks and were missing them. The Pistons had everything going when they tied it."

"We fought too hard not to win when we went up by three," Collins said. "But we're digging ourselves a huge hole every night. We fight back and let it get away. That's what hurts."
