GAME RECAP

Glen Rice and Vlade Divac combined for 23 of Charlotte's 40 points in the fourth quarter as the Hornets rallied for their third straight win, 119-102 over the Miami Heat.

Rice, who led all scorers with 26 points on 10-of-16 shooting, had 13 during the Hornets' fourth-quarter rally against his former team. Divac chipped in with 10 of his 22 points in the final quarter and finished with 10 rebounds. Anthony Mason also had 11 boards.

Charlotte is off to its best start in franchise history at 7-3, and seven of its last eight after an 0-2 start.

Tim Hardaway led Miami with 23 points and 10 assists. Issac Austin added 21 points and seven rebounds and Jamal Mashburn 18 points before fouling out late in the fourth quarter.

Miami grabbed an 89-84 lead with 9:01 after a three-pointer from Hardaway, but the Hornets responded with a 7-2 burst to forge a 91-91 tie with 6:37 left.

From that point, Charlotte took control with an 18-7 run, capped by a Rice 13-foot jumper to make it 109-98 with 1:30 remaining. Rice and Divac combined for all the points, with Rice netting 13, including a key three-pointer to make it 107-98 with 2:09 to play.

"We played great for three quarters. We just disintegrated in the fourth," said Hardaway. "It is demoralizing when a team does this to you. We did a good job containing Glen in the first three quarters, however, he decided to elevate his game in the fourth and all we could do was watch."

Miami had seven turnovers that led to 12 Charlotte points in the final quarter.

"We had five turnovers in the last few minutes of the game. We couldn't generate any offense and they hit all of their shots," said Miami coach Pat Riley, who watched Charlotte shoot 75 percent (15-of-20) from the field over the last 12 minutes. "This team gives us tough matchups, especially with P.J. Brown in foul trouble early. They have good size and good shooters and you have to be at your best tp beat them. You have to step up and make plays, and we didn't make any."

"It all started with defense. We got aggressive on 'D' and rolled from there," said Rice, who has averaged 32.6 points in the Hornets' seven wins. "This year, we have physical players and they keep it up through the game. I really think that Bobby (Phills) did a great job at the point. When someone goes down and guys step up, it makes the game a lot easier."

Phills, who played mostly point guard, replaced David Wesley when he left the game with a bruised right knee with 3:47 left in the third quarter. Phills finished with 14 points and nine assists.
