GAME RECAP

Vin Baker had 22 points and seven rebounds and Hersey Hawkins added 18 points and seven boards as the Seattle SuperSonics raced to a 20-point first-quarter lead and cruised to their third straight win, a 94-74 rout of the San Antonio Spurs.

Seattle built a 36-16 lead after one quarter. Baker scored 18 points in the first half and Hawkins 14 as the Sonics extended their advantage to 60-37 at halftime. They coasted to their fifth straight win over San Antonio as Gary Payton contributed 17 points, 14 assists and eight rebounds.

San Antonio, which shot 34 percent (28-of-82) from the field, was led by Monty Williams, who had 13 points. David Robinson, who shot just 4-of-12 from the field, finished with a season-low nine points, the first time in 11 games he did not lead the Spurs in scoring.

"They came out and shot the ball well and we compounded the problem by not running our offense very well," said Robinson. "They were more aggressive at every phase of the game. They posted up stronger, they rebounded better and they wanted the ball more than we did."

The Spurs suffered their third loss in four games and the 74 points were a season-low. They also managed to connect on only 50 percent (15-of-30) of their free throw attempts.

"We came out and were fortunate that our game plan worked early," said Baker. "We were running the floor and putting a lot of pressure on their big guys. We kept the lead and kept it togther for four quarters.

Holding a 15-12 lead midway through the first quarter, the Sonics went on a 21-4 run, beginning with a jumper by Baker and ending with a layup by Payton with 3.4 seconds left to make it 36-16.

The Sonics shot 70 percent (16-of-29) from the field in the first quarter while holding the Spurs to 39 percent (7-of-18).

Seattle extended its lead after opening the second quarter on a 10-4 spurt. Greg Anthony's jumper with 7:30 remaining in the half gave the Sonics a 46-20 advantage and they went into intermission with a 60-37 bulge.

"We each had the same number of shots (41) in the first half," said Spurs coach Gregg Popovich. "We even made more free throws, but they shot 61 percent because we didn't guard. They got a big lead and we couldn't recover from it. Every time we passed the ball somebody bobbled it."

Seattle's biggest lead of the second half was 87-56 following a layup by Payton with 7:49 remaining.

"We just boxed them out, made rebounds and ran down the floor," said Payton. "We knew the big guys can't get down the floor all the time, so we basically just got our running game going."

Seattle coach George Karl was ejected with 3:46 left in the second quarter for arguing with officials.
