GAME RECAP

Shareef Abdur-Rahim scored 20 of his 28 points in the second half, including four in the final 82 seconds, as the Vancouver Grizzlies pulled out a 99-96 victory over the Denver Nuggets, who remained the league's only winless team at 0-10.

The Grizzlies trailed 84-77 after three quarters but opened the fourth with a 14-2 run, keyed by four points from Abdur-Rahim. Blue Edwards scored six during that spurt and his basket with 6:49 to play gave Vancouver a 91-86 lead.

Back-to-back jumpers by Dean Garrett and Johnny Newman trimmed Denver's deficit to 95-92 with 3:24 to go. Abdur-Rahim sank a pair free throws just over two minutes later and, after Bryant Stith hit a pair of foul shots, added a 19-foot jumper with 48 seconds remaining for a 99-94 edge.

Nuggets rookie Bobby Jackson was one assist shy of a triple-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds and hit two free throws with 35 seconds to play. Denver had an opportunity to tie in the final seconds, but Newman's three-pointer was off the mark and Jackson stepped out of bounds tracking down the rebound.

"We came together as as team, played great defense, did all the little things right and got the W," Abdur-Rahim said.

Otis Thorpe had 17 points and eight rebounds, helping the Grizzlies to their fourth straight home win.

Stith and Newman scored 22 points apiece for the Nuggets, who were beaten at home by Vancouver on Tuesday, 100-87.

"We let them back in it and we couldn't turn the game around when they went ahead," Stith said.

"I'm at a loss for words," Nuggets coach Bill Hanzlik said. "We just stood around watching in the fourth. We've got to get people moving."

Vancouver trailed for most of the game but began to erase an 11-point halftime deficit with an 11-2 run midway through the third quarter. Abdur-Rahim, who grabbed nine rebounds, scored seven points on that burst and a jumper by rookie Antonio Daniels pulled the Grizzlies within 67-62 with 6:08 left in the period.

Newman answered with a three-pointer and after Abdur-Rahim sank two free throws, rookie Danny Fortson converted a three-point play to increase the lead to 73-64. Fortson's layup with 3:09 to go in the third gave Denver an 80-67 lead.

But Vancouver steadily fought back and Abdur-Rahim had a three-point play of his own with three-tenths of a second left to cut the deficit to seven.

"I think everybody was pretty disappointed at the half," Abdur-Rahim said. "I don't think coach had to say much to motivate us."

Vancouver's Sam Mack scored 13 of his 14 points in the opening period but Denver grabbed a 33-28 lead. Fortson had eight of his 17 points in the second quarter, lifting the Nuggets to a 59-48 halftime advantage.

"I was very disappointed once again in the way we started," Grizzlies coach Brian Hill said. "We were more aggressive offensively (in the second half) and once again our second unit came in and did a great job with their defense."

"I think pride had a lot to do with the win," Thorpe said. "The first quarter, we didn't meet the challenge. In the second half, I think we did."

Garrett registered 13 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks for Denver, which is off to the worst start in team history.
