GAME RECAP

Rookie Brevin Knight had a league season-high and Gund Arena record 20 assists and Wesley Person scored 22 of his 31 points in the first half as the Cleveland Cavaliers handed the Washington Wizards their fifth straight loss, 110-101.

"We were making a lot of shots," Knight said. "When that happens, someone gets a lot of assists. I have never had this many assists in my life. This is a happy first for me."

The Cavaliers reached the century mark in points in consecutive games for the first time since February 17th and 19th in last season's 50th and 51st contests. They downed the Minnesota Timberwolves 103-80 on Friday.

Person was hot from the tip, scoring five points as Cleveland took the lead for good in the first quarter with an early 13-6 run. He had 16 in the opening session and finished with five three-pointers.

"I just had great ryhthm in that first quarter," said Person. "It helped loosen up the Washington defense."

Rod Strickland scored 27 points and dished out 17 assists and Juwan Howard added 24 points for Washington, which lost All-Star forward Chris Webber to a knee injury in the early going.

Knight, who turned 22 earlier this month, had the Cavs' highest assist total since Mark Price also passed for 20 in 1990. It was the most since Geoff Huston's team-record 27 in 1982. Knight also contributed 13 points on 4-of-6 shooting.

"My son is in the Pac-10 at Oregon State, and he raved about him (Knight)," said Wizards coach Bernie Bickerstaff. "If you check the history of Cleveland, they do a very good job of drafting point guards. Knight kept his composure, penetrated and made good decisions. I thought he was excellent."

It's all instinct. You see something develop, you have to make the play," said Knight. "I have to be ready for a challenge every night."

Leading 57-54 at halftime, The Cavs took control with an 8-2 burst to start the third quarter. Shawn Kemp triggered it with a jumper and Cedric Henderson hit a layup for a 61-54 lead. Knight stroked a six-footer and Kemp gave Cleveland an 11-point cushion with a basket.

Kemp hit on 11-of-17 shots to finish with 24 points and 10 rebounds and Person drained 9-of-15 in falling two points short of his career high. The Cavaliers shot well from everywhere, hitting 27-of-32 from the line and 5-of-8 from three-point range while shooting 59 percent (39-of-66) overall.

"Person got us going in the first half," said Cavaliers coach Mike Fratello. "Kemp bounced back in the second half with some big baskets and Knight's performance was just outstanding."

Cleveland's Cedric Henderson contributed 13 points and seven rebounds and rookie Derek Anderson chipped in with 12 off the bench.

Washington, which last lost five straight from January 31st to February 14th, has dropped seven of its last nine games. Reserve Tracy Murray poured in 20 points off for the Wizards.

Webber bruised his left knee when he was fouled midway through the first quarter.

The Wizards put together a 7-0 run and pulled within 90-84 on Howard's jumper with 4 1/2 minutes left. But Kemp drained a 20-footer and followed with a dunk to end the threat.
