GAME RECAP

Antoine Walker scored 29 points and Tyus Edney made a crucial defensive play in the closing seconds, giving the Boston Celtics their first victory over the slumping Detroit Pistons in over 19 months, 90-86.

Ron Mercer scored 16 points and fellow rookie Chauncey Billups added 13 for the Celtics (7-6), who have won six of their last seven games. Boston did not win its seventh game last season until January 5th.

"At this point I'm really ecstatic about our record," Celtics coach Rick Pitino said. "I'm not going to worry about the Lakers (their next game), I just want to savor this victory."

"Right now we're in the middle of the pack at 7-6," Walker said. "That's really not a big surprise to us."

Grant Hill had 21 points and 11 rebounds and Brian Williams added 19 and 10 for the Pistons, who had beaten the Celtics five straight times since April 7th, 1996.

"The game was there for us to take," Pistons coach Doug Collins said. "We just didn't get it done. We played well enough to lose and that's discouraging."

Detroit (5-9) has dropped nine of 12 since a 2-0 start. It did not lose its ninth game last season until January 14th.

A dunk by Malik Sealy capped a 10-2 spurt and gave the Pistons a 70-66 lead with 8:14 to play. But the Celtics answered with their own 10-2 burst to take the lead for good. A three-point play by Walker and a three-pointer from Billups gave Boston a 76-72 lead with 5:23 remaining.

A free throw by Billups extended the lead to 83-78 with 2 1/2 minutes left, but Hill made four free throws to cut the deficit to one with 56 seconds to go. Billups missed a three-pointer, but Mercer rebounded and was fouled, making two free throws for an 85-82 lead with 34 seconds to play.

Hill drove but had his shot blocked by Pervis Ellison. As the Detroit bench screamed for goaltending, Walker dunked at the other end with 22 seconds to play. Williams had a dunk and Mercer missed two free throws before Hill made a pair, cutting the deficit to 87-86 with 7.6 seconds left.

"We put Pervis in mainly for defense and he came up with another big play on Grant," Pitino said. "Remember, he didn't play for a year and a half. I think we've discovered another player and that player is Pervis Ellison."

"Tonight we played effective one-on-one defense on Grant Hill," Walker said. "We didn't allow him to do what he wanted to do."

The Pistons fouled Edney and the 5-10 guard made the first but missed the second. Sealy quickly dribbled into the frontcourt, but Edney poked away the ball from behind and it was recovered by Dee Brown, who made two clinching free throws.

Brown scored nine points for the Celtics, who shot 40 percent (34-of-85) from the field and forced 25 turnovers, leading to 28 points.

"Detroit has played three games in four nights and we pressed them tonight to try and take advantage of that," Pitino said. "This is the first game we've pressed for the entire game."

Lindsey Hunter scored 16 points, Sealy added 11 and Joe Dumars 10 for the Pistons, who shot 41 percent (29-of-70) and held a 41-37 rebounding edge.

"We just have to stay positive and play hard," Hill said. "But once again, we found a way to lose. There was a series of careless plays on our part; that's what really cost us. When we get a win, we'll get the confidence we need. They are not the team to play on a back-to-back."

Williams scored eight points as Detroit opened a 23-19 lead after one quarter. Boston closed to 37-36 at halftime and 10 third-quarter points by Walker gave the Celtics a 66-61 lead entering the final period.
