GAME RECAP

Corliss Williamson scored 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Sacramento Kings used a pivotal fourth-quarter run to post a 97-93 win over the winless Denver Nuggets, who suffered their 12th straight loss.

Williamson also dished out seven assists while Mitch Richmond added 22 points for the Kings, who won for the third time in four games.

Denver held an 89-86 lead before Anthony Johnson hit a jumper to bring Sacramento within one with 3:16 to play. Michael Stewart's jumper with 2:39 to play gave the Kings a 90-89 lead, but LaPhonso Ellis' layup at the 2:20 mark gave Denver its last lead at 91-90.

Williamson's free throw with 1:40 to play tied it, and the Kings went ahead for good on Richmond's jump shot with 46 seconds left. After Dean Garrett missed a pair of free throws, Williamson canned a turnaround jumper with 8.7 seconds to go for a 95-91 advantage.

"We were trying to look for Mitch, he was kind of bottled up and I was fortunate enough to get the ball and lucky for me, the shot fell," commented Williamson.

"Corliss Williamson really came through with a big, big game," Sacramento coach Eddie Jordan said. "His turnaround jumper was awesome. It was one of the best go to moves in the clutch that I've seen from this team other than Mitch. It seems like the more he play, the better we are as a team."

Anthony Goldwire's layup with 2.3 seconds remaining cut the deficit to 95-93, but Willamson sank two free throws with under one second left to seal the win.

Johnny Newman led Denver with 19 points while Garrett added 13 and a career-high 21 rebounds. The Nuggets are mired in the worst start in franchise history and are three losses shy of matching their worst stretch, set during the 1992-93 campaign. They are also five losses shy of Miami's record for futility set during the 1988-89 campaign.

"We battled back on the road and we battled back with a different lineup," Denver coach Bill Hanzlik said. "I'm a positive guy and I going to keep believing in our guys becaue I know we are playing well enough to win. I know the future of our team can get better."

Sacramento was ahead 56-52 early in third quarter before going on a 14-3 spurt, capped by Richmond's layup with 3:46 left in the period for their biggest lead of the game, 71-55.

But Denver closed the quarter on a 12-4 burst to draw within 75-67. The Nuggets continued their run into the final stanza, capped by Newman's layup with 8:23 to play for a 79-77 lead.

Sacramento hit 49 percent (39-of-79) of its shots from the field, while the Nuggets connected on 47 percent (37-of-79).
