GAME RECAP

David Benoit scored six straight points in the fourth quarter as the New Jersey Nets turned to their bench to break open a close game and defeat the Golden State Warriors, 101-87.

New Jersey led 73-71 after three quarters, but coach John Calipari decided to sit all five starters. The Nets came out for the the final session with Benoit, Michael Cage and Xavier McDaniel in the frontcourt along with guards Sherman Douglas and Kevin Edwards.

"It was a very ugly win but a good win, a win we needed very badly," Calipari said. "The best thing about this game was seeing Kendall (Gill) hit some huge shots, Benoit snapping out of his little slump and 32 team assists."

Douglas opened the quarter with a lay-in and Benoit took over, sinking two jumpers and a layup in quick succession to give the Nets an 81-71 advantage.

Golden State's Donyell Marshall, who had 25 points and a career-high 22 rebounds, ended the run with a basket and Muggsy Bogues hit a jumper to cut the lead to six. But Kerry Kittles returned and hit a three-pointer to give New Jersey a nine-point cushion.

Marshall was the first Warrior to score over 20 points and grab 20 rebounds since Joe Smith had 23 and 20 against the Bulls on February 2nd, 1996.

"We need to play a whole game and keep our confidence up," said Marshall. "We made some mistakes in the fourth quarter when we were down by four and that hurt us. Against Kendall, I just try to bang with him inside and do the best I could."

Kittles and Sam Cassell had 18 points apiece and Gill added 16, eight rebounds and eight assists for the Nets, who have won four of their last five. Cassell chipped in with nine assists and Douglas added seven for New Jersey, which was outrebounded 50-42. Douglas also led the bench with nine points as the Nets shot 47 percent (38-of-81) from the field.

"We're just playing great team ball right now," said Kittles. "We just have better players this year. (Kenny) Gatling is such a threat in the post it leaves me open on the perimeter. When we play unselfish team ball, I'm going to get my shots and we're going to win."

The Nets (8-4) are off to their best start since joining the NBA. Last season, they did not record their eighth win until December 27th.

New Jersey used a 10-0 run to build a 20-9 lead midway through the first quarter. Cassell scored six points in the burst, which was capped by Gill's driving layup with 4:18 to go.

The Warriors scored the first 10 points of the second quarter to pull within 28-25. A tip-in by Marshall, Latrell Sprewell's lay-in and successive slams by David Vaughn and Marshall cut it to three before Douglas sank a runner in the lane. Vaughn had 13 points and a career-best 13 rebounds off the bench for the Warriors, who shot 41 percent (36-of-88) overall.

Marshall hit from behind the arc to close the gap to 30-28, but a 13-4 run by the Nets pushed the lead to 45-32. The teams traded baskets as the Nets took a 52-43 halftime lead. Marshall, who shot 11-of-24 overall, had 16 points and 15 rebounds at the half.

Smith scored 16 points and Sprewell was held to 12 on 5-of-17 shooting for Golden State, which has failed to reach 90 points in six of 12 games this season.

The Nets capitalized on 13-of-15 free throw attempts while shooting 47.5 percent (19-of-40) from the field in the first half.

The Warriors were able to close within two after ending the fourth quarter with a 16-7 run, but New Jersey held them to only one field goal over the first 4 1/2 minutes of the fourth to take command.

"I thought we played very hard," said Golden State coach P.J. Carlesimo. "I just thought we got tired and did not have enough people in the backcourt. We stretched out some guys more minutes than they're used to playing."

Golden State dropped to 0-4 at home.
