GAME RECAP

Arvydas Sabonis scored 13 points and grabbed nine rebounds and rookie Alvin Williams had six points down the stretch as the Portland Trail Blazers held off the Minnesota Timberwolves, 96-90, for their league-best seventh road victory.

Portland held a 76-64 in the fourth quarter until the Timberwolves roared back with a 15-4 run. Sam Mitchell scored six points in the burst, including a 16-footer that narrowed the gap to 80-79 with 4:42 left.

Williams followed with a 10-footer and a pair of free throws in quick succession to turn back the threat. After Minnesota closed within two on Tom Gugliotta's free throw with 3:23 left, Williams sank a pair from the line to give Portland an 86-82 cushion.

"I felt pretty comfortable in the fourth quarter," Williams said. "I felt that if I played hard, things would fall my way."

Gugliotta had 18 points and Mitchell added 17 for the Wolves, who have dropped four straight and six of eight overall.

"You go through times in your life when you are tested," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. "We are being tested. Our guys hear the boos and they are playing tight. We're out there with blank looks on our faces. Right now, we need more lovin' than kickin.'"

Williams finished with 12 points and six assists for the Trail Blazers, who led as many as 17 points late in the second quarter.

"The more I play, the more things I'll pick up," said Williams. I'm playing behind two veteran point guards in John Crotty and Kenny Anderson, so I don't think I can do anything but get better."

The Timberwolves scored the opening bucket for their only advantage before Stacy Augmon collected eight first-quarter points to pace the Blazers to a 25-16 lead after one.

"We're not doing the right things," observed Gugliotta. "We spot teams double-digit leads and then try to come back. Portland came out physical, and that's their game. That's why they won."

Augmon finished with 12 points and Brian Grant added 10 for Portland, which shot 44 percent (36-of-81) from the field and held a 45-29 edge on the boards.

"So far, we've been able to do a good job of rebounding and responding," said Portland coach Mike Dunleavy. "We're not getting beat badly by anybody at this point. We've been down big and we've come back against teams, because our defense and rebounding have been solid."

A 9-0 run, capped by Mitchell's 16-footer 3:04 into the second quarter gave Minnesota a 25-25 tie. But Portland exploded for 14 straight points over the next 3 1/2 minutes to go ahead for good. Mitchell hit 6-of-10 field goals off the bench in 27 minutes for the Wolves, who shot 40 percent (29-of-72) from the field.

The Wolves made a final run in the last 84 seconds. Stephon Marbury, who scored 15 points but managed just three assists, hit a pair from the line to pull Minnesota within 92-86. Mitchell followed with a lay-in and Marbury hit two more foul shots to make it a two-point game with 26.8 remaining. But Kelvin Cato dunked and Wallace sank two free throws with 3.6 to ice it.
