GAME RECAP

Brian Williams scored 26 points and grabbed 14 rebounds and Joe Dumars added 10 of his 13 points in the second half as the Detroit Pistons rallied from a 19-point third-quarter deficit for an 86-78 victory over the depleted New York Knicks.

The Knicks went ice-cold in the second half, shooting a woeful 23 percent (8-of-35) from the field and scoring just 15 points in the final 18:38. New York shot just 35 percent (24-of-69) overall in matching its lowest scoring output of the season.

After Patrick Ewing hit two free throws to give New York a 63-42 lead 5:27 left in the third quarter, Grant Hill poured in eight of his 24 points in a 22-1 run as the Pistons cut the deficit to 64-63.

"It looked like once again we were mired in the mud, but we fought ourselves out of it," said Pistons coach Doug Collins. "Finally we hit a couple of big shots and a couple of their shots did not go in. It was a great win."

Theo Ratliff capped the burst with a foul shot with less than a minute to go in the period, but Detroit would not go ahead until Williams made a banker with 5:33 remaining for a 72-71 edge.

Ewing hit 1-of-2 from the line to pull the Knicks even, but Dumars nailed a three-pointer to put the Pistons ahead for good and Williams followed with a basket.

"They did a good job defensively. They played with desperation and we didn't match that," observed Van Gundy. "They made a good run, Dumars' three was a big shot."

Malik Sealy had 13 points and a season-high 10 rebounds for Detroit (6-10), which improved to 4-2 against the Atlantic Division with its second win over the Knicks in as many games.

Ewing disappeared in the fourth quarter, hitting just two free throws to finish with 27 points. Teammate Buck Williams had 13 points and 12 rebounds, moving past Hall-of-Famer Bob Pettit into 11th place on the all-time rebounding list with 12,850.

New York, which had won three in a row, was without starting forwards Charles Oakley and Larry Johnson. Oakley was serving a one-game suspension for slapping Vancouver's Otis Thorpe in Sunday's game and Johnson sat with a sprained ankle.

Ewing blocked six shots but could not find his rhythm on offense, shooting just 8-of-22 from the field. Williams was the only Knick to shoot over 43 percent from the floor, hitting 3-of-4, while Chris Mills, the other emergency starter up front, fouled out with nine points.

"During the end of the third quarter and into the fourth, I just couldn't buy a basket," said Ewing. "Nothing I did seemed to work. They made a run and we didn't keep our composure and fight back. I was happy with the shots I got, they just didn't fall."

John Starks came alive with New York trailing 77-72 with 99 seconds left. Starks, who contributed 13 points off the bench, hit consecutive baskets, pulling the Knicks within a point until Sealy's bucket made it 79-76 with 55 seconds to go.

Starks answered with a driving layup to slice the margin back to one, but Williams and Hill hit shots and Sealy hit three free throws as Detroit ended the game with a 7-0 spurt.

"In the third quarter, it was like, here we go again," said Hill. "But we just buckled down and got some stops, got some points in the third quarter and got close. We made it a 2-to-4 point game and we did what we haven't done, making plays and getting stops down the stretch."

Detroit shot poorly as well, connecting on 42 percent (30-of-72) but holding a 42-37 edge on the boards. Dumars, who has been slowed all season by injuries, hit all four of Detroit's 13 three-point attempts.
