GAME RECAP

Reggie Miller scored 24 points and Antonio Davis grabbed 12 rebounds, including seven on the offensive end, as the Indiana Pacers pushed around the struggling Chicago Bulls, 94-83.

Rik Smits chipped in with 18 points and 11 rebounds and Dale Davis 10 boards for the Pacers, who held a 52-39 advantage on the glass. The win snapped Indiana's four-game losing streak against the Bulls, who won all four meetings between the teams during the 1996-97 season.

"Wins like this really feel good, especially with the way we played down the stretch," said Indiana coach Larry Bird. "We had a seven-point lead for a long time, couldn't build on it, and they got it back down (to three). Then we made some plays.

"The way we've been playing down the stretch, this is a big win. We've got to build on this. If we don't win on Sunday (against Philadelphia), this won't mean a thing."

Michael Jordan scored 26 points but uncharacteristically missed four of eight free throws for the Bulls, who made 15-of-28 from the line. Dennis Rodman added 11 rebounds and Luc Longley 14 points as the Bulls dropped their second consecutive road game and fell to 2-6 away from home.

"It starts with me. We're not shooting well and we're struggling at the free throw line," said Jordan. "We're missing a lot of easy shots but we're still staying within striking distance. What killed us tonight was our rebounding.

"In the fourth quarter we made a little run and got back into it. We haven't put together a good rhythm yet. We haven't put together back-to-back or a streak of good games."

Led by Jordan's 13 points, Chicago grabbed a 42-41 halftime lead. The Bulls stretched the lead to 54-47, following a fast-break dunk by Jordan with 7:16 left in the third quarter.

Indiana changed the momentum by going on a 10-2 run over the next 3:18. Smits started the spurt with a layup and Miller finished it off, also with a layup, moving the Pacers into a 61-56 lead.

The Pacers maintained their five-point edge through the end of the third quarter. Miller scored 10 points, Smits added nine and Dale Davis snared seven rebounds in the period.

The Bulls cut the deficit to 77-74 with 5:04 remaining when Jud Buechler nailed an 18-footer. Smits answered with a jumper 15 seconds later, but Longley hit a pair of free throws with 4:33 to go.

Smits converted a three-point play and, after a free throw from Chicago's Toni Kukoc, Antonio Davis had a thundering dunk. A baseline jumper by Jordan closed the marghin to five points with 2:52 remaining, but Miller sank a three-pointer from the left corner 17 seconds later to give Indiana an 87-79 advantage.

"We kept our composure from start to finish. I was very pleased with our composure down the stretch," said Antonio Davis. "That has been the difference between winning and losing the games we lost earlier in the year. It felt good to have a complete game effort from everyone."

"This is a team under adjustment," Chicago coach Phil Jackson said. "As a team we are starting to adjust. We're like a dual-piston engine running on one piston. We've become a Mack truck from a Ferrari."
