GAME RECAP

Karl Malone had 21 points and eight rebounds as the Utah Jazz had little trouble in continuing their recent dominance over the woeful Golden State Warriors with a 111-82 rout.

Greg Foster had a career-high 18 points and Shandon Anderson added 13 for Utah, which has won five straight and 10 of the last 11 meetings with Golden State.

"I know if I get rolling like I did in the first quarter, (coach) Jerry (Sloan) is going to keep me out there," Foster said. "But how many of these nights are you going to have? You never know, but it's been my experience that they come here and there and you just take them and have fun when they come."

Rookie Jacque Vaughn handed out eight assists for the Jazz (8-6), who have won three in a row overall games and moved two games over .500 for the first time this season. Utah received points from 11 players and no starter played more than 27 minutes.

"I thought we did a lot of things well tonight, but we were also pretty sloppy much of the night," said Sloan. "These guys get paid a lot of money to think out there and we still haven't put together four quarters in a game yet."

Latrell Sprewell scored 30 points for the Warriors, who have been held under 88 points in each of three straight losses since their only win of the season. Donyell Marshall recorded 15 points and seven rebounds for Golden State, which shot a meager 34 percent (31-for-92) from the field.

"We missed a lot of shots," said Marshall, who at 7-of-12 was the only Warrior to shoot better than 50 percent from the floor. "We took a lot of jumpers, we didn't go inside like we should have and that really hurt us a lot. We didn't start any penetration until late in the game and by that time, it was too late."

Greg Ostertag came off the bench to contribute 10 rebounds and eight points for Utah, which shot 53 percent (43-for-81) from the floor. The Jazz dominated inside, outscoring the Warriors 52-38 in the paint and holding a 51-38 advantage on the glass.

"They pounded us on the boards," said Golden State coach P.J. Carlesimo. "We didn't take strong shots inside. We had good shots but we bailed out. We just let them become the more aggressive team with the rebounding and running the floor. I don't think you could single out any area; you wouldn't exclude any area."

Howard Eisley, who had seven points and five assists, gave the Jazz the lead for good at 7-6 with a free throw with 9:24 left in the opening period. Eisley capped a 9-0 burst with a jumper for a 16-6 advantage with 7:17 left in the quarter.

The Warriors managed to cut the deficit to 19-18 when Sprewell's three-pointer capped a 12-3 run. But Foster scored five points in a 15-1 burst, capped by Jeff Hornacek's layup for a 34-19 cushion with 19 seconds left.

"When we're winning, we're always getting 28 to 30 assists a game," said Hornacek, who had five of Utah's 36 assists. "When we're losing we get 18 to 20, but tonight I looked up and we had 2 1/2 minutes to go in the first half and we were already at 23 assists, I said, `Holy cow, we have just about the total for a game and it's not even halftime.' So guys were passing the ball well and not being selfish and making the extra passes and created a lot of easy shots."

"Well we played aggressive for six or seven minutes and then let them become the dominant team," Carlesimo added. "We didn't meet their aggression and we dug ourselves a big hole. You can't back down to them anywhere, particularly in this building."

Ostertag's layup capped a 14-0 run and gave the Jazz a 51-23 bulge with 7:20 left in the first half. Golden State was held scoreless for nearly 6 1/2 minutes until Bimbo Coles made a free throw to cut the deficit to 51-24 with 5:16 left in the second period.

Adam Keefe, who had 12 points and a career-high six assists, hit a layup to give the Jazz their biggest lead at 79-44 with 5:20 to go in the third quarter. Golden State came no closer than 16 points thereafter.
