GAME RECAP

Karl Malone scored a season-high 42 points and had a key jumper and steal in the final 30 seconds as the Utah Jazz posted their fourth straight victory, 94-91 over the injury-riddled Los Angeles Clippers.

After Lamond Murray hit two free throws to put the Clippers ahead 91-90 with 41 seconds remaining, Malone took over. He connected on a 15-foot turnaround jumper to put Utah ahead for good with 23 seconds left. Malone also grabbed 18 rebounds.

"He looked terrific," commented Utah coach Jerry Sloan, referring to Malone. "He tries to do everything we ask him to do. I couldn't be any luckier to coach him."

The Clippers had a chance to tie, but Malone poked the ball away from Rodney Rogers in the right corner to preserve the win. Jeff Hornacek sank a pair of free throws to seal the win.

Malone talked about his steal.

"I knew he (Rogers) was probably going to take the last shot or go to the basket," he said. "I know he likes to go baseline, so I just tried to get over there. He made his move and it just came out of his hands. I guess it was Christmas early."

Hornacek added 17 points and Shandon Anderson contributed 11 for the Jazz, who improved to 3-4 on the road.

Eric Piatkowski, making his first start of the season, led the Clippers with 20 points and a career-high 13 rebounds.

"It hurts. First the Bulls loss, now this loss," Piatkowski said. "We're playing some of the best teams in the league and we're right there."

Los Angeles played without starters Brent Barry and Loy Vaught. Barry missed the game with a left leg contusion, while Vaught was sidelined for the fourth straight game with back spasms.

Malone, who scored 16 of his points in the final quarter, hit a jumper with 2:56 to play to put the Jazz ahead 86-83. Rogers and Pooh Richardson connected on jumpers on consecutive trips down the floor to give the Clippers an 87-86 advantage with 1:40 left.

The Jazz regained the lead on Malone's 18-footer, but Rogers' layup with 70 seconds to play gave the Clippers an 89-88 lead before Malone canned a pair of free throws with 57 seconds remaining for a 90-89 lead. Rogers finished with 19 points.

Malone connected on 17-of-29 shots for the Jazz, who shot 43 percent (25-for-81) from the floor. The Clippers finished at 45 percent (37-of-82).

Murray scored 12 points and Piatkowski had 10 as the Clippers held a 49-48 advantage at the half. They extended their lead to 70-64 with 2:50 left in the third quarter, but Utah scored the final six points to forge a 70-70 tie after three quarters.
