GAME RECAP

David Robinson scored 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds and Tim Duncan added 17, 14 and five blocks to pace the San Antonio Spurs to their fifth straight win over the Dallas Mavericks, 96-87.

Robinson and Duncan had a field day in the absence of Dallas center Shawn Bradley, who is out with a torn left calf muscle. The two combined for all eight of San Antonio's blocks -- six in the decisive third quarter -- and along with Sean Elliott, outscored the Mavericks' front line 40-24.

"I tried to make an impact," said Dallas center Samaki Walker, who fouled out with seven points and five rebounds. "They have some good players. We hung tough but we couldn't control them. We had some good energy, but Duncan and Robinson wear you down."

Avery Johnson added 16 points for the Spurs, who closed the third quarter with a 24-11 spurt to win for just the second time in five games.

"It was a great difference playing with Vinny (Del Negro)" said Robinson. "We were able to use our pick-and-roll. Also, Vinny spots up well on his jumper."

Del Negro scored eight points over 31 minutes in his first action since coming off the injured list Wednesday.

Dallas forged a 48-48 tie on A.C. Green's 14-footer with 7:35 left in the third quarter, but Elliott made a three-pointer and Del Negro followed with a jumper as San Antonio steadily built a 72-59 lead after three periods.

Michael Finley scored a career-high 35 points and Dennis Scott added 16 for the Mavericks, who snapped a 10-game losing streak on Friday with a win against the hapless Toronto Raptors.

"Michael has the qualities to be a superstar," said Dallas coach Jim Cleamons. "The thing he needs is to play with consistency. That goes for the whole team. I need to put out a carrot and make them go for it each night."

The Mavericks did stay close on the glass. Led by Finley's nine rebounds and Green's eight, they trailed just 41-35 on the boards. But they saw 14 turnovers become 17 San Antonio points.

Finley gave the Mavs a 44-41 advantage with a basket 34 seconds into the third quarter. But the Spurs took the lead for good with a 6-0 run, going up 47-44 on buckets by Duncan, Robinson and Johnson.

"We played pretty well except for the third quarter," said Cleamons. "The Spurs, with their height and athleticism, got extra shots. I told the guys they gave a good effort."

Malik Rose added 11 points off then bench for San Antonio, which shot 49 percent (37-of-76) from the field and improved to 4-4 at home.

"I'm just satisfied with playing well," Duncan said. "I've learned a lot from David, Avery and Sean. Just about everybody on this team has helped me."

Khalid Reeves added 11 points for the Mavericks, who hit 42 percent (33-of-78) of their shots and got just 12 points from their bench.

San Antonio built its lead as large as 16 points when Elliott drained a three-pointer with 4:20 left.
