GAME RECAP

Christian Laettner, Steve Smith and Ty Corbin combined for all the points in a game-opening run as the Atlanta Hawks cruised to a 108-96 victory over the San Antonio Spurs.

Dikembe Mutombo scored 22 points and Laettner added 18 for Atlanta, which started with a 14-4 tear over the first 4:44 of the contest and cruised to improve its record to a league-best 14-2, including 9-1 at home.

The Hawks are 20-7 all-time at home against San Antonio and have won the last three games between the teams. Atlanta has won 12 consecutive home games against Midwest Division opponents since an 85-78 setback to the Minnesota Timberwolves on December 12th, 1995.

David Robinson scored 23 points and rookie Tim Duncan added 20 for San Antonio, which fell to 4-4 on the road. The Spurs, who have failed to top 100 points in their last three contests, fell to 5-6 when they do not reach the century mark.

"We didn't play well throughout," said Duncan, who was 9-of-14 from the field. "We didn't stop anybody. They had their way and I think our focus right now is to go out there and get back to the defense that we were playing at the beginning of the season."

Atlanta is 12-1 when holding opponents under 100 points and won by a double-digit margin for just the third time this season.

"I thought we came out ready, everyone was lively," noted Hawks coach Lenny Wilkens. "I thought we did exactly what we wanted to do. We wanted to come out fast, get going, execute, push the ball and we did exactly that."

Laettner opened the scoring with a 14-footer 72 seconds into the contest and added a layup to make it 4-0. After a dunk by Robinson put the Spurs on the scoreboard, Corbin hit a 15-footer and Laettner added another jumper -- both on feeds from Smith -- to push the lead to 8-2 with nine minutes left.

Avery Johnson hit a five-foot hook shot for San Antonio before Smith added two free throws and a 14-foot jumper. Corbin capped the burst with a 16-footer to give Atlanta a 14-4 bulge with 7:16 to go in the first quarter.

Mutombo and rookie Ed Gray scored four points apiece in a 14-3 run during the second quarter, pushing the lead to 48-31 with 3:56 left in the half on Mutombo's three-point play.

"It was a great game for the fact that Christian and I came out very big from the beginning," said Mutombo. "We kind of took them out of the offense. I am just glad defensively I was on top of my game."

Atlanta took its largest lead of the game at 95-69 following a hook shot by Mutombo with 9:58 to play. The Spurs got no closer than the final margin.

Chucky Brown scored a season-high 14 points for the Hawks, who shot 57 percent (45-of-79) from the field. Mookie Blaylock added eight points and 11 assists.

The Spurs shot 53 percent (40-of-75) from the floor. Johnson had 10 points and seven assists.

"From the beginning, we weren't very good offensively or defensively," said Robinson. "Getting stops on the other side is the big problem. They got 60 points in the first half, that's too many."
