GAME RECAP

Karl Malone scored 19 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and made an alert play in the final minute as the Utah Jazz posted their seventh straight win over the New Jersey Nets, 100-95.

Jeff Hornacek added 11 points, including 5-of-6 free throws in the final 80 seconds, as the Jazz won their fifth straight overall. But it was Malone's inbounds pass with 31 seconds left that gave the Jazz some much-needed breathing room.

With the Jazz leading 94-89 and the shot clock running down, Malone inbounded the ball under his own basket. He threw the pass off the backside of Nets forward Chris Gatling and grabbed the loose ball. Alone under the hoop, Malone missed his layup but was able to tap home the rebound before the defense could recover.

Sam Cassell had 26 points and 10 assists for New Jersey, which has not won in Salt Lake City since 1992. Four other Nets reached double figures but Kendall Gill did not, snapping his 108-game streak, the fourth-longest in the league.

"I thought that was a pretty good basketball game," said Nets coach John Calipari. "We are a different team, more talented and more aggressive. Smarter, deeper and I thought we played a good basketball game.

The Nets trailed 92-89 with 2:19 left and had a chance to cut into the deficit but Jayson Williams missed an 13-foot jump shot. Hornacek was fouled and made a pair from the line to push the lead to five.

Gill, forced to play the point because Cassell and backup Sherman Douglas fouled out, attempted to drive the lane but the ball bounced off his knee and lost possession. Malone's heady play gave Utah a 96-89 lead but the Nets did not fold.

After the teams exchanged free throws, Kevin Edwards drained a three-pointer with eight seconds left to bring New Jersey within 98-95. But Hornacek sank two free throws with 3.4 seconds to go to seal the win. Gill attempted to keep his streak alive by taking the inbounds pass and racing upcourt. The Jazz contested him all the way and his desperation shot from 40 feet went in just after the buzzer sounded.

"We made dumb mistakes," said Williams. "We didn't execute. Bad shots, myself. We didn't make free throws, myself. I gotta look in the mirror, that's all. We should have won. This one hurt."

Adam Keefe made 6-of-7 shots and scored 14 points to go along with nine rebounds for the Jazz, who are 21-4 at home against New Jersey. Howard Eisley added 12 points, seven assists and three steals for Utah, which got 14 points off the bench from Shandon Anderson.

"These guys played well tonight and just kept coming at us," said Jazz coach Jerry Sloan. "Every time we got a bit of a lead we got casual. But when we executed and stayed within what we were trying to do for more than just the one option, we were OK."

"It was definitely kind of fits and spurts out there," said Keefe. "But it was an important game. I thought they played great, they were coming off a game last night and we had the off day and were playing at home."

Williams finished with 16 and nine rebounds and Kerry Kittles added 13 points for the Nets, who concluded a 3-2 road trip.
