GAME RECAP

Glen Rice scored 30 points and David Wesley collected nine of a franchise-record 41 assists, leading the Charlotte Hornets to a 121-102 win over the Sacramento Kings.

Dell Curry chipped in with 18 points on 8-for-10 from the floor, Vlade Divac eight rebounds and Bobby Phills and B.J. Armstrong six assists apiece as the hot-shooting Hornets snapped a two-game losing streak.

"One of the things that we tried to do was stop this losing streak," said Rice. "We came out with a lot of energy and that was important. When we get going early, it gives us an opportunity to win every game."

Mitch Richmond had 25 points and Billy Owens 11 rebounds for the Kings, who dropped their fourth straight game.

Charlotte shot a season-high 59 percent (51-for-86) from the field. Sacramento shot 53 percent (42-for-79) but allowed 71 points in the second half.

The Hornets also shot 54 percent (7-for-13) from three-point range, with Rice sinking 3-of-4. The Kings were just 2-of-7 from behind the arc.

"We shot the ball a lot better tonight, we had lots of assists and we made our free throws," said Charlotte coach Dave Cowens. "Dell Curry had a spectacular game tonight; he was ready both times he came into the game.

With the game tied 50-50 at the half, the Hornets went on a 27-11 spurt to open the third quarter, beginning with Phills' jumper and capped off by a three-pointer from Wesley, to take a 77-61 lead with 3:34 left in the third quarter. Rice scored nine points during the run and 14 in the period, which ended with the Hornets holding an 86-68 lead.

"We really put a lot of emphasis on defense and making quick decisions," Cowens said. "At halftime we talked about pick-and-rolls and blocking out better, and we did both."

"We let the game get out of hand in the second half and our defense seemed to go sour," said Richmond. "With Glen and Dell hitting their outside shots, the momentum shifted and we didin't try to take it back. I am through talking to this team."

Sacramento started fast, going on a 16-7 run in the first quarter to take a 24-15 lead. Richmond contributed six points in that burst and the Kings opened a 28-21 lead after one period.

Charlotte responded with a 17-4 run that began four minutes into the second quarter, turning a 34-29 deficit into a 46-39 lead with 2:50 left in the half. Anthony Mason, who had 12 points, began the rally with a jumper and Curry finished it with a three-point play.

"One day, we will learn to put it together, to sustain and to focus. When we do that, we can win more than people think we can," said Sacramento coach Eddie Jordan. "We have got to raise our level and get to another notch in our play. It seems that the other team always steps it up, but we have not been able to do that yet. But I know we can."
