GAME RECAP

Steve Smith scored 12 of his season-high 28 points in the second quarter as the Atlanta Hawks cruised to their fourth straight win, 112-79 over the reeling Dallas Mavericks, who suffered their worst home loss of the season.

Christian Laettner, Dikembe Mutombo and rookie Ed Gray added 15 points apiece for Atlanta (14-2), which owns the best overall record and the best road record (6-1) in the league.

"We want to stay at the top of our conference and go all the way to the end," Mutombo said. "As good as we were in the month of November, we want to repeat the same thing in the month of December."

Smith was 13-of-20 from the field overall and had 18 points by halftime, when Atlanta took a 65-49 lead. Dallas got no closer than 14 points in the second half and watched the Hawks establish a season high for points scored.

"Steve (Smith) has been terrific, he's having a great year," Hawks coach Lenny Wilkens said. "With him back, it makes a huge difference because of the versatility."

Samaki Walker tied a career high with 14 points and grabbed a career-best 15 rebounds, but Dallas still lost for the 12th time in 13 games. Michael Finley scored 18 points and Dennis Scott added 15 for the Mavericks, who scored just 13 of their 30 second-half points in the fourth quarter.

"Nobody likes to lose, but it is a learning experience," Walker said. "We've got to learn how to play through a lot of the pressures of losing."

The Mavericks, who are still without injured center Shawn Bradley, shot 34 percent (31-of-92) from the field and connected on just 3-of-18 three-pointers. Bradley has been sidelined with a calf injury.

"We have to become a better-shooting basketball team," Mavs coach Jim Cleamons said. "When you have a team that is struggling, sometimes everyone tries to take it upon themselves. And the best thing to do is relax with the ball and find the open man."

Dallas raced to an early 13-6 lead, but the Hawks used a 19-6 run to take the lead for good. Mutombo, who had three blocks, sparked the spurt with a layup and Mookie Blaylock's driving layup capped capped it with 2:17 left in the first quarter.

Mutombo scored six points in the run and Laettner five as Atlanta opened a 31-26 lead after one period. Mutombo had six more points in a 16-4 burst early in the second quarter. Gray added six on that run and Eldridge Recasner's three-pointer created a 47-32 cushion with 7:33 to go.

Smith's 15-foot jumper with 29 seconds left before halftime increased the advantage to 65-48.

Atlanta led 82-66 after three quarters and put the game away by scoring 20 of the game's final 23 points. Gray, who played just 16 minutes, had eight points during that stretch.

"Any time you play a team, forget their record," Wilkens said. "If you start thinking about it, you get a little complacent. Sometimes it looks easy, but it isn't."

Chucky Brown contributed 12 points and nine rebounds and Mookie Blaylock chipped in 10 points and 10 boards for Atlanta, which owned a 59-46 rebounding edge. The Hawks have outrebounded their opponent all but one game this season.

Dallas, which was outscored 58-34 in the paint, has lost four straight and 11 of the last 13 meetings in this series.
