GAME RECAP

Charles Barkley had a triple-double and emergency starter Matt Bullard scored a season-high 22 points as the Houston Rockets won their sixth straight game, 112-101 over the Denver Nuggets.

Clyde Drexler scored 22 points and Kevin Willis added 19 for the Rockets, who shot 53 percent (40-of-76) from the field and led by as many as 28 points. The Rockets are 7-0 when Willis is in the starting lineup.

"This is a little faster pace than some of the other games we've had this year," Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "We had some defensive lapses in the second half and they have some guys who can shoot. I'm really happy with how Matt came through for us."

Barkley, who was coming off a 43-point game at Golden State, had 15 points, 11 rebounds and 12 assists for the 20th triple-double of his career. He and Detroit's Grant Hill are the only players with triple-doubles this season.

Johnny Newman scored 32 points and rookie Danny Fortson added 22 -- both season highs off the bench -- for the Nuggets (1-13), who won for the first time this season on Saturday. Denver cut the deficit to five points with five minutes to go but fell to 0-8 on the road.

"I'm happy with the way we got back in the game," Nuggets coach Bill Hanzlik said. "We're a very young team and I'm still learning what we can and can't do. This was our first game we scored over 100 points and that's a positive for us."

Bullard started at forward for Mario Elie, who has a wrist injury. Bullard was 6-of-11 from three-point range and made a trio of three-pointers in the first quarter, but the Rockets did not take the lead until Eddie Johnson's three-pointer at the buzzer made it 33-31.

That triggered an 18-6 run that included a three-pointer by Emanual Davis and was capped by another three-pointer by Johnson that gave Houston a 48-37 lead with 7:56 left in the second quarter. The Rockets were 12-of-28 from behind the arc.

"I'm not going to fool anybody, I'm a shooter," Bullard said. "Teams that play us have a tough decision -- do they try to take away the inside and leave the shooters open, or the other way around? I hit some threes, Eddie Johnson hit some threes and Emanual Davis hit some threes tonight. It was a lot of fun."

Willis scored five points in a 10-4 spurt that closed the half and gave Houston a 68-47 lead. The Rockets shot 65 percent (13-of-20) in the period.

A three-point play by Drexler completed a 9-0 spree and gave the Rockets their largest lead at 76-48 with 8:24 remaining in the third quarter. The teams traded baskets before Newman scored 10 points and Fortson nine in a 23-8 run that closed the period and pulled Denver within 86-73.

"The character on this team is good," Newman said. "The young guys play real hard. We're going to be all right."

A layup by Johnson, who scored 17 points, rebuilt the lead to 97-78 with 9:32 to play. But Newman scored nine points in a 15-1 burst, including a dunk that made it 98-93 with 4:57 to go. The teams exchanged baskets again before two free throws each by Barkley and Drexler gave Houston an 11-point lead with 2:59 to play.

"Even when we got up big I didn't think it was over," Barkley said. "But I was disappointed we didn't finish them off sooner."

Davis scored 12 points for the Rockets, who were outrebounded 42-30 but made 20-of-24 free throws.

Rookie Eric Washington scored 14 points and Fortson and Dean Garrett grabbed 11 rebounds apiece for the Nuggets, who shot 49 percent (40-of-82) but got just 40 points from their starters.

"We kept playing hard even when we were down big," Fortson said. "We kept our composure and we trapped Barkley a little bit better. That helped us get back in the game."
