GAME RECAP

Isaac Austin scored 20 of his 28 points in the first half and reserve Eric Murdock added 11 of his season-high 17 in the final quarter as the Miami Heat held off the Philadelphia 76ers, 94-90.

Murdock, in his sixth season and first with Miami, came off the bench to spark the Heat in the fourth quarter after Philadelphia's Allen Iverson forged a 72-72 tie with the last shot of the third period.

Terry Cummings knotted it at 74-74 with a pair of free throws early in the period, but Murdock scored four points in a 7-0 run that put away the 76ers for good. Jamal Mashburn had a free throw and P.J. Brown hit a jumper in the burst, which led to Miami's fourth straight win over Philadelphia.

"Tonight the shot was falling for me," Murdock said. "They didn't plan to go to me in the fourth quarter, it was just the flow of the game. Playing with Tim (Hardaway) in the fourth quarter has really helped."

"He was aggressive and active," Hardaway said. "It takes some pressure off of me having someone like him in the game to pass the ball and hit shots."

Iverson had 21 points, Clarence Weatherspoon 14 and 13 rebounds and Cumming chipped in 13 off the bench for Philadelphia, which never led.

Austin, whose play has been exemplary in a season-long starting role in place of the injured Alonzo Mourning, recorded a career high with five steals and tied another career mark with 12 field goals.

"He (Austin) has proven he's a top-notch center," Cummings said. "He can carry his own against anyone. What's impressive about him is that he hasn't done it once or twice, he's done it quite often."

Hardaway added 20 points, 11 assists and four steals and Mashburn had 10 points despite hitting just 3-of-12 shots for the Heat, who took a half-game lead over Orlando in the tight Atlantic Division.

Brown had nine points and 10 rebounds as the Heat shot 49 percent (36-of-73) from the field but converted just 17-of-29 free throws. They won for the seventh time in its last eight home games, improving to 8-2 at Miami Arena this season.

Miami held a 49-43 lead at halftime and built a 60-47 edge early in the third quarter on a lay-in by Mashburn. But the 76ers answered as Weatherspoon converted on a three-point play three minutes into the period to spark a 16-3 run. Weatherspoon had five points in the run and Iverson contrinuted four, including a 10-footer to make it 63-63.

But the Heat clamped down defensively in the final period, holding the Sixers without a field goal until a bucket by Jim Jackson pulled Philadelphia within 81-76 with 7:06 to go.

"Our backcourt defense was pretty bad," said Sixers coach Larry Brown. "When it was 74-74, we had eight possessions where we did not score, and I only remember a couple of shots."

Jackson and Jerry Stackhouse scored 14 points apiece for Philadelphia, which hit 47 percent (36-of-77) of its shots and saw its 22 turnovers turned into 31 points by Miami.

"We didn't take care of the ball," said Stackhouse, who committed eight turnovers. "We had so many turnovers and that turned the game. It gave them too many possessions. They kept pounding us inside and wore us down."

Miami guard Voshon Lenard did not play due to a sprained left ankle, but is expected to be in the lineup on Friday against Boston.
