GAME RECAP

Don Nelson made a successful debut as Dallas Mavericks coach against his previous team as former Knick Hubert Davis scored 16 of his 20 points in the final 14 minutes of a 105-91 victory over New York.

Nelson, who became general manager of the Mavericks in February, assumed a dual role today when he fired coach Jim Cleamons and most of his staff. Nelson was fired after less than one season as Knicks coach in March 1996.

Davis, who played from 1992 to 1996 with the Knicks, drilled a three-pointer that capped a 9-0 burst late in the third quarter. He added 13 points in the final period to match his season high.

Michael Finley scored 27 points and Khalid Reeves added 24 for the Mavericks, who had lost 12 of their last 13 games. They were coming off their worst home loss of the season and beat the Knicks for just the second time in 13 meetings.

Patrick Ewing scored 20 points and Allan Houston added 17 for the Knicks. The was the first time in seven losses that New York did not squander a fourth-quarter lead.

A driving layup by John Starks, who scored 15 points, pulled the Knicks within 65-58 with 4:07 remaining in the third quarter. But A.C. Green scored a pair of baskets around a hoop by Dennis Scott before Davis made his three-pointer to give Dallas its largest lead at 74-58 with 1:48 to go.

The Mavs took a 74-62 lead into the fourth quarter and Davis made a three-pointer to help maintain a double-digit lead. The Knicks were called for consecutive traveling violations before a jumper by Starks cut the deficit to 94-86 with 1:47 left.

But Starks immediately was whistled for a technical foul. Davis made the free throw, beginning a stretch of 8-of-9 from the line that closed the game and sealed the win for Nelson, improving his career record to 852-629. The team received a standing ovation as the final 15 seconds ticked off.

Green had 14 points and 11 rebounds and Scott scored 12 points for the Mavericks, who shot 46 percent (37-of-81) from the field, including 12-of-22 from three-point range. Dallas had just 14 turnovers.

Chris Childs scored 16 points for the Knicks, who shot 50 percent (38-of-76) but just 4-of-11 from behind the arc. Buck Williams grabbed 13 rebounds and Ewing pulled down 11 as New York held a 43-37 advantage on the glass.

Finley scored 11 points as the rejuvenated Mavs raced to a 31-18 lead after one quarter. Ewing scored six points in the second period as the Knicks closed to 45-41 at halftime.
