GAME RECAP

Former Hawk Kevin Willis scored a season-high 31 points, including five in a row during a pivotal fourth-quarter run, as the Houston Rockets won their seventh straight game with a 94-87 victory over Atlanta.

Willis hit 15-of-21 shots from the field and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Rockets remained undefeated in his eight starts this season. Willis, who led the charge with 11 points in the final quarter, spent 10 seasons with Atlanta before being traded to Miami in November 1994.

"Our team really pulled together and got the job done," said Willis. "It was a total team effort against what right now is the best team in the league."

Houston trailed 76-70 early in the fourth quarter before Willis converted a three-point play to halve the deficit, then nailed a jumper to pull the Rockets within a point with 8:27 to go. Charles Barkley, who finished with 25 points and 10 boards, scored the next four points to cap a 9-0 burst.

"This was a big win in what I thought was a playoff-like atmosphere," said Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich. "Our chemistry has been terrific. Tonight we found each other and made big plays when it counted."

The Rockets' reserves played a huge part in the victory, outscoring the Hawks' bench 28-1. Eddie Johnson, who had a big second quarter and came back in the third after Mario Elie left with an injured right wrist, scored 14 points.

Willis, Barkley (10) and Johnson (five) scored all of Houston's points in the fourth quarter.

"We were close down the stretch and our big guys were phenomenal," Tomjanovich said. "Charles weeded through the defense and Eddie Johnson and Kevin Willis all gave us big fourth quarters."

Steve Smith scored 22 points and Mookie Blaylock 20 as the Hawks saw their six-game winning streak snapped. Tyrone Corbin added a season-high 16 points and Christian Laettner chipped in 12 and 10 rebounds for Atlanta, which shot 46 percent (36-of-78) from the field but missed 17-of-22 three-point attempts.

Clinging to a 69-68 lead after three quarters, the Hawks opened the final session with a 7-2 run. Smith nailed a three-pointer and Johnson answered with a bucket for Houston, but a lay-in by Corbin and two free throws by Smith gave Atlanta its biggest second-half lead, 76-70.

"Tremendously played basketball game by both teams," said Atlanta coach Lenny Wilkens. "We had a six-point lead early in the fourth, but couldn't pull away. Houston continued to fight and deserved the victory."

Dikembe Mutombo had 16 points and eight rebounds as all five starters scored in double figures for Atlanta.

The Hawks held a 22-16 edge entering the second quarter, but Johnson scored nine points and the Rockets built a 35-26 advantage on Barkley's 15-footer with 6:06 left in the half.

"Even though we have the best record, we were probably playing the best team in the league tonight," Blaylock said. "They got a great effort from everybody that played and are really coming together without Olajuwon."

The Rockets travel to Mexico City, Mexico on Sunday for the first regular season NBA game ever played south of the border. Barkley, who also had seven assists, is looking forward to the trip.

"I'm going to take care of the margaritas and Kevin Willis will take care of the senoritas," Barkley quipped."
