GAME RECAP

Nick Van Exel had 25 points and Kobe Bryant scored 15 of his 17 points in the second half as the Los Angeles Lakers stayed perfect at home and against Western Conference foes with a 98-88 victory over the San Antonio Spurs.

The Lakers, the only unbeaten team at home, improved to 8-0 at the Great Western Forum and 12-0 against the West. Los Angeles also bettered its mark to 4-2 since All-Star Shaquille O'Neal went down with his latest injury.

"The confidence is definitely there this year," said Van Exel, who sank 4-of-6 three-pointers. "We're just playing so free it's a big difference. I just feel really good out there."

Elden Campbell had eight of his 21 points in a decisive third-quarter run, including a pair from the foul line with 6:23 to go that put the Lakers ahead for good, 57-55. Los Angeles built its lead to 74-63 on Bryant's three-pointer with 39 seconds left in the quarter.

"Elden was a monster out there on both ends of the court," said Lakers coach Del Harris. "Our big guys, (Robert) Horry and Campbell, did an outstanding job on Duncan and Robinson."

David Robinson scored 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and Tim Duncan contributed 18 and nine for the Spurs, who have lost three straight road games and three of four overall.

"Nick (Van Exel) stepped up and made some incredible shots and we just didn't have an answer for it," Duncan said. "We played well the whole way through, but they hit a couple of three-pointers to pull away."

Horry had 11 points and nine boards and Campbell added seven rebounds as the Lakers held a 40-36 advantage off the glass and forced 21 turnovers.

Los Angeles took a 45-43 lead into the third quarter, but Avery Johnson's two free throws put San Antonio ahead 53-51 with 7:35 left. Campbell's dunk followed by Van Exel's basket gave the Lakers the lead until Johnson pulled San Antonio even with a bucket.

The Lakers shot just 43 percent (33-of-77) from the field but hit 7-of-15 three-point attempts and 25-of-28 free throws.

Cory Alexander, who had 12 points and four assists off the bench, moved the Spurs within 94-88 with a lay-in with 44 seconds left, but Bryant sank four free throws to seal the victory.
