GAME RECAP

Stephon Marbury scored 22 points and Kevin Garnett added 18 as the Minnesota Timberwolves handed the Sacramento Kings their sixth straight loss, 101-90.

Tom Gugliotta contributed 17 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists and five blocks for the Timberwolves, who won for just the second time in their last eight games.

Mitch Richmond scored 29 points and Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf added 18 for Sacramento, which had won the previous four meetings with the Timberwolves. The Kings lost for the ninth time in 10 road games.

After Michael Stewart's tip-in brought the Kings within 82-79 with 6:19 to play in the fourth quarter, the Timberwolves went on a 7-0 spurt to put the game away.

Marbury hit a jumper followed by a pair of free throws and Terry Porter's three-pointer capped the run for an 89-79 advantage with 4:35 to play. The Kings could get no closer than eight points the rest of the way.

"They made some big shots in the fourth quarter and we did not," Richmond said. "That was the game. We have to play better defense. I thought it would be good enough but it was not, especially in the fourth quarter."

Marbury connected on 9-of-15 shots from the field for Minnesota, which shot 57 percent (39-of-69) from the floor.

"Tonight we knew we had to get a win," Marbury said. "We put more pressure on ourselves and that made us more successful."

Garnett and Marbury scored six points apiece in the opening quarter as Minnesota held a 27-25 edge. Garnett had a stellar game from the field, hitting on 8-of-10 attempts.

"I've been getting up extra shots after practice," Garnett said, referring to his shooting. "I sit down with Randy Wittman, and he tells me the do's and dont's. The main thing he's been telling me is that I need to drive to the basket and get into the flow of the offense."

Sacramento opened the second quarter with an 8-2 burst, capped by Lawrence Funderburke's dunk with 9:40 left for a 33-29 lead. The Kings took their biggest lead of the game at 45-40 on a running jumper by Abdul-Rauf with 5:30 remaining.

But the Timberwolves responded with a 9-2 run to close the half for a 49-47 lead. Minnesota scored six of the fisrt seven points in the third quarter for a 55-48 advantage.

A jumper by Richmond with 4:21 to play in the third forged a 61-61 tie, but Garnett's runner at the 4:02 mark put the Wolves ahead for good at 63-61.

Garnett and Gugliotta combined for 23 rebounds for Minnesota, which held a 43-33 rebounding advantage, while holding the Kings to 41 percent shooting (37-for-90).
