GAME RECAP

LaPhonso Ellis scored nine of his season-high 21 points in the fourth quarter, when the Denver Nuggets outscored the Los Angeles Clippers by 16 points en route to just their second win of the season, 100-92.

Rookies Bobby Jackson and Danny Fortson tallied 17 and 15 points, respectively, for Denver, which ended a three-game losing streak. It was just the third win for the Nuggets in the last nine meetings with the Clippers.

"We don't have a star-studded team, but we got contributions from everybody," said Denver coach Bill Hanzlik. "LaPhonso ran the court great tonight. He directed the defense. LaPhonso and I talked a little bit and I asked him how we could get over the hump. And he really showed his leadership out there."

Eric Piatkowski and Rodney Rogers scored 18 points apiece for Los Angeles, which has dropped four of its last five overall and seven in a row on the road. The Clippers were outscored 30-14 in the final quarter.

The Nuggets trailed 78-70 after three quarters and were down 82-73 before rallying with an 11-0 run. Ellis had seven points in the spurt and Johnny Newman's fastbreak layup with 5:59 to go gave them an 84-82 lead.

After Lorenzen Wright scored four straight points for Los Angeles, Tony Battie netted four points in an 8-0 spurt, including a follow-up layup with 2:56 remaining that made it 92-86 in favor of the Nuggets. The Clippers would get as close as four points on two occasions, but Newman and Anthony Goldwire would combine to nail seven free throws in the final 49 seconds to seal the win.

"Give those guys (Nuggets) credit for playing defense," said Los Angeles coach Bill Fitch. "Our guys played one-on-one basketball. That's two nights in a row where we've scored 14 points in the fourth quarter. We've got that perfected. We had too many guys trying to do it on their own."

Ellis added six rebounds and six assists, while Jackson totaled nine boards, six assists and a career-high five steals for Denver. Battie finished with 12 points and seven rebounds and Newman scored 10.

"It's great to get the win, we're not that talented just to go out and go through the motions, so we want to get out and play hard," said Ellis. "Jackson's starting to mature and recognize the good situations. He's getting it to the hot shooter. It's important for our young guys to taste victory."

Los Angeles raced out to a 9-2 lead, but Denver ended the first quarter with eight straight points en route to a 34-24 lead. The 34 points were a season best for a quarter.

The Clippers responded by beginning the second period with a 14-5 run. Lamond Murray had a pair of baskets and Darrick Martin's three-point play with 6:15 left cut the gap to 39-38. Piatkowski tallied 11 points in the first half as L.A. assumed a 52-51 edge at the break.

The teams played evenly for the first seven minutes of the third quarter until Pooh Richardson and Piatkowski each scored four points in a 12-2 burst that gave the Clips a 78-68 cushion with 34.9 seconds left in the period.

Murray recorded 13 points and seven boards off the bench and Richardson had 12 points and seven assists.
