GAME RECAP

Reggie Miller's 18-footer from the right side at the overtime buzzer gave the Indiana Pacers their sixth straight victory, 99-97 over the Phoenix Suns.

The Pacers took possession after Danny Manning, who led the Suns with 25 points and 12 rebounds, threw away a pass with 2.5 seconds to go. The Pacers called time to advance the ball to halfcourt and Miller took the inbounds pass at the top of the circle, took a couple of dribbles to the right and launched the game-winner.

"We were looking to get the switch, but I'm glad we didn't get the switch because the guy I was screening was Danny Manning," Miller said. "If they had switched, he definitely would have had the height advantage. I knew I was going to get the shot because Jason (Kidd) was on me. The question wasn't if I was going to get the shot off, it was where I was going to shoot it."

Miller was held scoreless on 0-for-5 shooting in the first half but finished with 19 points for the Pacers, who blew a 10-point lead in the final four minutes of regulation but regrouped in overtime. Miller was 6-of-9 for 14 points in the third period and finished 8-of-20 from the field.

"Other players probably would have got down cause I missed a lot of easy shots in the first half, but I gotta look at it, if I miss five in a row I'm gonna make five in a row," Miller said. "Any great player wants the ball, I always like to silence the crowd. At home you're expected to make the shots and big plays, but on the road, that separates the good players from the great -- their ability to hit the shot when it's 12 guys versus 20,000."

Rik Smits scored 16 points and Jalen Rose added 14 for Indiana, which improved to 3-0 on its five-game road trip and won for the first time in five games decided by three points or less.

"I thought our guys played their hearts out today," Pacers coach Larry Bird said. "We've been on a road trip and coming here tonight, our guys could have just packed it in, but they came out in the first half and played great defense and Reggie made the big shot."

Bird was coaching for the first time against former Boston Celtics teammate Danny Ainge, the coach of the Suns.

"We were lucky to be there in overtime, we played bad the first three quarters," Ainge said. "It took us to get down by 10 and it took the crowd to get us going before we started playing."

A free throw by Hot Rod Williams with 3:34 left in overtime gave Phoenix a 93-92 lead, its first since the opening two minutes. But Rose made a 15-footer and Smits sank two free throws to give Indiana a 96-93 edge with 1:09 remaining.

Williams scored and was fouled. He missed the free throw, but Manning rebounded and put in the go-ahead basket with 56 seconds left. Smits missed, but Dale Davis was fouled after grabbing the offensive rebound and made 1-of-2, tying the game at 97-97 with 35 seconds to play.

A layup by Mark Jackson with 9:21 left in the third quarter gave the Pacers their largest lead at 54-41. They still led 89-79 after Travis Best's layup with 3:58 to play in the fourth period before the Suns closed regulation with an 11-1 spurt.

Manning and Jason Kidd scored four points apiece and George McCloud made a three-pointer in the run. Manning's 11-footer tied it 90-90 with 16 seconds to go and Jackson missed with just under three seconds to go. A halfcourt shot by Kidd bounced off the rim at the buzzer.

"We had them and they made a great run and came back," Jackson said. "It was a great game for the fans to watch. It was incredible. We both made great plays on both ends of the floor."

Chris Mullin scored 13 points and Jackson added 12 and 12 assists for the Pacers, who shot 45 percent (40-of-89) and held a 50-49 rebounding edge. Davis grabbed 11 boards and Antonio Davis pulled down 10.

McCloud had 18 points and 11 rebounds and Kidd had 13 points and 12 assists for the Suns, who shot 43 percent (40-of-94) but missed 11-of-22 free throws. Manning was 3-of-7 from the line.

"Tonight I felt like I kind of lost the game for us," Manning said. "Turning the ball over at the end of the game with the game tied, allowing them to get the game-winner. We didn't shoot free throws well as a team and I think that right there, if we make our free throws, we win the game."

Smits scored 12 points and Rose 10 in the first half as Indiana opened a 46-41 halftime lead. Manning kept Phoenix close with 11 points.
